Just want to know if canon ever released a non IS version, how much do they go for now-a-days, - and is it worth it (Obviously for sports or wildife)

PS has anyone got any samples images of the 500 F4 non IS

Yep, they sure did. You can find one for <$4k. They're around here and there. I've seen a couple on FM.

there was a 500 F4.5L, which was the predecessor to the 500 F4. From what i know its plenty sharp, and should actually be lighter. you can pick them up at a pretty fair deal these days ( i think i saw one for under $4K the other day). the disadvantage is the loss light and therefore the loss of the ability to AF with the 1.4x extender on all camera bodies, and the 2x on 1series. if you dont want extenders (which are very nice on these super teles), and dont want to foot the bill for a new IS one, they seem like a nice package.

I think the only one was f/4.5L
Fantastic lens, right up there with the 500mm for optics.
The f/4.5 means no 1.4x T-con and AF on the non 1 series, and of course no AF with the 2X even on a 1 series.

But it also means it's a bit lighter weight than the f/4.

The ones I have seen selel were in fact for under $3K.. but that was a while ago.

Another excellent 500mm f/4.5 is the Sigma EX HSM. You lose nothing in IQ and can find it used for not much more than $2k
Just make sure you are looking at an EX HSM,. the earlier version which is called "APO" lacks the HSM focus and pre-dates the EX series. Not worth getting in the long run.

IIRC, the canon 500 f4IS is the replacement of the canon 500 f4.5 non-IS.

LOL when ever someone on this forum mentions either "1d"; 300 f2.8"; 500mm; 600mm" you will get major activity - hell, I love looking at them too
its even better when someone uploads pics -

Every time someone buys a 1d I look in hope for some sample pics of the camera, or what it can do, same go's for most of the $$$ stuff
