I just ordered the 50mm 1.4 and got to thinking of whether or not I need a hood on it. Is it worth the extra money, or just something to take up a little more space in my case?

i have the hood. it's big enough to protect it from small bumps when i'm not careful. i have not noticed any type of flare when i'm out in daylight using it.

Not too sure about the 500 f/1.4, but alot of other hoods can be attached in reverse to save space.

dunno if a hood for the 500 f/1.4 is available, any idea of the filter diameter? ;)

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I typically store my lenses with the hood on backwards, and i guess for $25 it can't hurt. I will most likely get it, b/c like you said, it will help to protect the lens. Thanks

It doesn't really take up space as it fits on backwards, nice and snug, for storage.

I say yes get it.

A hood is another form of cheap insurance. Swinging from a shoulder or neck, you never can tell when the lens may try to make a new friend, or something tries to take a bite out of it.

Also, flare and strong reflection can come from a lot of different sources, ruin the shot, or at least lower contrast and saturation. The hood is a pretty decent deterrent for this.
