That once I get it I'm afraid they will make an IS version of it. Then I will be screwed. The same goes for the 24-105. What if I buy it and they release a 2.8 version? Do you think they will ever release these versions? Should I wait?

Either way, they're always going to come out with something different. No matter what, you shouldn't be regretful of the things that you buy.

I can see you have the 70-200 f/4. I'm sure you're happy with it even if they did release the IS.

24-70 is an ideal lens to have IS - obviously no clue if Canon thinks the same way :(

But never hold back a purchase coz something better may come out.......

Unless, of course, you catch wind of the EF 10-800 f/1.2 with prime level sharpness, that's selling for 1k and is about the size of a kit lens. Then I'd wait :p

IS made the 70-200L f4 IS 55 gms heavier which is pretty insignificant.

the price got pretty heavy tho ;) !

i figure whenever canon decides to release the 24-70L IS or better yet the 24-85L IS it will be redesigned sans back asswards zoom and bucket hood and probably weigh about the same as the 24-105L.

i figure this new L would sell for about $1800....which is about twice as much as i paid for my 24-70L :D .

Doubt you will see it. Buy if you think it will help you. Even if an IS version came out, the resale value would still be high.

I would get it and use it, it's a great lens. If the IS comes out, it'll be easy to sell.

I'm going to say something hugely incinderary, controversial and apt to win me a few flames. :D

But I sold my 24-70L and bought the 17-55 EF-S IS. 24mm on the 20D is 38mm full frame, which for a fast lens that would be used indoors a lot, 38mm is pretty long.

I sold the L for 1100 dollars (more then I paid for it) and bought the EFS for 1050. For weddings, I am able to sell about 10 percent more pictures. Also, the lens is so sharp, that I change lenses a lot less (not to mention I don't use my other body with the flash and bracket as much indoors).

I share this opinion only to help confuse you further. ;) But my opinion is ultimately that wide/angle and standard zooms should be matched with the camera body, ie. a crop body goes with crop lenses.

:D Yup! As predicted, let it begin!

Of course I did. It's not "L" or "EF-S" to me, it was "24-70" and "17-55" to me. I'm not a name kind of person, I just take each lens on its own merits. If I shot more in poor conditions, versus air conditioned interiors, then I would have kept the L...

It's not L versus EFS, it's good tool versus better tool. But I know how unimpressive the EFS line is to afficandos. Surprising considering that at so many wedding I watch with surprise as amatuer photogs back up 60 feet into the refreshments so they can fit 12 people into their 40mm focal length..

Not trying to apply a "better" title to anything.

but the right lens for the group shots would be the 16-35/17-40 on the EF line. That wide is actually more vital along with the 70-200, where actually IS is most useful in longer lengths(not that it isn't still useful in shorter FL's).

on the 1.6 crop, you get a wide FOV of about 27-28mm and about 55mm on the long end, which is pretty long enough for the up close stuff, while the 70-200 covers anything long. And of course you should have a second body if you are being paid for it. Idealy this should be the bare min.

The ideas still work the same, as even with the EF-S 17-55, you should have that second body with the 70-200. It's all about picking the correct lens for the correct situations.

While you sit worrying about "what-ifs" you're not taking any photos... get the lens you need now, use it to take pictures and deal with or ignore any updates if and when they happen.
