I have a used 300D on the way, and I asked the seller if he installed 'the firmware hack'....said he did it right when he got the camera new...

I have a very basic understanding of the firmware update "hack"....

By uploading the firmware, did that mean he was able to set the camera to do certain things (customizing how the camera works) and do you think it will present any problems for me, a brand new user to DSLR?

If so, what would be the easiest way "around" that? Ask him what custom functions he set and how to apply them....or just reset to factory settings, and then reload the hack and set them myself?

thanks :)

Yes, the firmware update means that certain functions that were not available in the 300D are now enabled - like the MLU.

Check out the stickies or google "wasia" or "Undutchables" . I have a file that has the features enabled by the hacks. In case you cant find it on the web, pm and I'll mail it to you.

got to the menu and select the last column, if it isn't hacked the last thing in the row should be firmware version 1.1.1 and when the hack is applied the last thing in the row will say cf. custum functions or something.

Look at the features enabled - and if you are going to use any of them, its completely worth it. After all, its free ;)

The hack is mandatory to me if you are going to use the 300D. I personally think that the original Digital Rebel is still one of the better deals out there from a price to performance standpoint and the hack only makes that better.

Get the hack and don't look back would be my advice. It is worth it for the flash exposure compensation alone - if nothing else.

like this:

Will it show "Custom Functions" if you're in the "Basic Zone"? The cameras with "official" CFs don't.

Do you mean the onboard flash? Or, an external one? Or, both?
Thanks .. :)

both.

The hack makes the 300D easier to use and has several necessary functions in my opinion. I installed Wasia about 30 days after I got my Rebel, and I was oh so glad I did.

Ya know .. i just looked at my 300D and went to the screen you have in this post ..
Mine looks just like yours does .. with *Custom Functions* but, in parenthesis right next to it, it says (C.Fn)

Ok .. I give up .. whats that mean? lol .. and I guess the guy I purchased this cool lil KISS black body from .. did the firmware hack?

One other thing .. My *communication* window says *PTP* where yours says *Normal* .. anyone have an answer? Or, 2 .. lol

Thanks
