Your very first commercial photos

I just inherited a suitcase of old family items from an aunty that died last November. In it I found she'd kept and treasured my very first commercial photography assignment - shooting aeroplanes at an airshow back in 1989.

The text is not what I wrote. My article was longer and it has been both trimmed and hacked about. The photos were all taken with a Cosina CT1 and a Sigma 600mm Mirror lens on Scotch 400 ASA slide film. Heaven knows why the editor converted them all to B/W. Anyway, here's my very first commercial photographs. I've shown you mine now show me yours!

Well, that would actually be editorial not commercial, but we wont split hairs here.

I'm surprised at some of the things that have been passed down. That was one that I'm very pleased to have. I did actually mean commercial in that I made money from that publication. It was a poor choice of word, however. Perhaps I should have said my first paid assignment.

Somewhere there's a photo of the Lord Mayor of Swansea holding a piece of blue cheese that was substituted for the moon rock samples when the moon rock failed to arrive in time for their astronomical exhibition. I remember taking that photo with my Nikon FM on HP5 film with my Metz 45 flash. That was published in the Mirror.

Well, it's not much, but our first published photo was featured in an artical in Chemical & Engineering News (of all places!):

The assistant editor just called me up one day and asked my permission to use a photo that she found on our personal website. We were not in business at the time, so all that I asked in return was a small photo credit and six copies of the printed journal, which arrived as promised a few weeks later.

The photo was taken with a Kodak DC290 (classic!). Cameras have come a long way since then.

Good for her, Rhys! Be sure to save that so your grandkids have something to "find", too.

Editors always think they know better, even if they don't!

A few Car Lighting Tips

Come to think of it, these were for two model comps which were shot on the same day at about the same time as the Challenger. Take your pick.
