I am either going to buy a Nikon D50 or a Canon 10D, I've held both, and I like how they both feel. I am familiar with the interface of canon, but I also like Nikons.

When I look at them side by side here:
http://www.dpreview.com …s10d%2Cnikon_d50&show=all (external link)

I just can't see spending around 600 used for the canon, where I can get the nikon for 500 new.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

$600 for D10 seems high. You might also check out the XT. 17photo has one for $529 with kit lens. One other consideration to remember is that your decision is more than a camera body. It has a whole lens system to consider as well. Plus, you have to seriously consider which forum you can live with in the long term.

If you are going to be shooting in low light at all I would not get the Nikon. Canon has way less noise at higher ISOs

I always caution people that when they buy an DSLR they are buying into a system, not just buying a camera. While some might disagree with this, I would wager that most people acquire a pretty good set of gear within the first couple of years of their purchase, and spend quite a bit of time and effort into learning how the system integrates. Therefore, I would caution you to look at the bigger picture and not just the entry price.

I'm with ya on the system concept, I'm well aware of this, and that would be the reason I would go with canon.

I was just curious why the bodies were priced so differently

I have to agree with Mark_Cohran. You are buying into a system. I choose this system for many reasons. One being that they already have Full Frame cameras which is my goal.

I'm hoping to walk behind Dante and get a 5D when he forgets it somewhere. ;)

banana,

I just can't see spending around 600 used for the canon, where I can get the nikon for 500 new.

Then don't! its that simple!

I personally wouldn't (and didn't) want to pay $$$ for a camera that at its best can only do ISO 200, thus I chose Canon over Nikon when I jumped into the DSLR world with my 10D 4 years ago (one of my better decisions :) ).
A 10D can be gotten for less anyway here at Amazon.com they have it used from $395 and new at $795 (external link) and here at B&H used from $539 (external link)
Of course this is just my opinion, get what you like and good luck with it :)

Interesting that Nikon's Canon Killer is priced to compete with a used 10D.

While you will get a different viewpoint from a dedicated Nikon shooter, Canon clearly leads the field in DSLR capability from entry level cameras to Pro-level cameras.

If you don't ever intend to have more than one lens, external flash, tripod, etc., then buy a quality P&S.

Otherwise, the depth of the system you are buying into is important, particularly if you don't plan on changing from Nikon to Canon later (or vice versa)

The 10D does an amazing job and is built well. It's major drawback that was corrected with the 20D and following bodies is the startup time. Compared to my 10D, my 30D has instant on.

As far as..., what you are missing, MORE research!

Ken

I picked up a completely clean, low miles, used 10D a few months ago for under $450. I personally think that used 10D's are a tremendous value right now in the used market. The built quality on the 10D and its grip are actually a bit superior to that of the 20d and 30D in my opinion. It does run a bit slower at startup and focuses slower, but I don't find either of those things to be show stoppers for me.

Body against body, the 10D will have an advantage. The equvilient to the 10D on Nikon's side, is their D100.

However, of course its the rest of the system that is important since bodies come and go, while glass stays relatively the same.

The 10D can be had for about 400-600. 600ish is high end and generally shouldn't be that high unless there is other stuff like a grip and more than one battery.

Thanks a lot guys! You're slowly drawing me into the canon DSLR sphere..

I went and held a 10D and a D50, and I flat out like the 10D better.

So, now its time to start the grueling search. :)

How do you feel about buying used bodies? Only get from a reputable dealer, or private party?

Once again, thanks so much for taking the time to help a person new to the DSLR world.

Buying used bodies can be a VERY good investment on your part. A friend of mine just bought a Rebel XT from someone on this forum, and he is very satisfied, and paid under $500 for it. Personally, I'd rather buy from a private party than a big dealer, as you're likely to get a lower price. However, if you're going to buy used, make sure the seller supplies you pictures of the actual camera, ANY flaws or damages on the body, equipment included, warranty information, and a shutter actuation count.

Also, for further comparo information, go here:

Select both the 10D and the D50 and you should have all the info you want :)
