Holy Crap! How long did it take you to amass 363,577 points???!!!

I'm not sure. I know I used quite a few in '03 for lodging for my 19-day Oahu/Maui/Kauai/Oahu trip. But, I've been an Amex member since '83 and a Rewards member since whenever they initially offered it. Also, for awhile, there were some opportunities to earn double points. In addition, I use Amex whenever possible. If I checked my annual statements, I could probably estimate, but it doesn't really matter, does it?

Does Amex actually charge you an additional fee to be in the Rewards program? I've only ever paid the normal annual fee that Amex charges every cardholder, as far back as '83 at least.

I normally use my Rewards points for hotel and rental car charges during vacations. Even though I've looked at merchandise before, I never really considered redeeming points for camera equipment.

Hmmm. I wonder what I could get for these?

You are correct...the $75 is for the Gold Card "goodies" as an annual charge.

At your totals there are lots of great Canon lenses available to you :)

Log into your account and then link to "ShopAMEX", once there then search on "Canon EF Lens" and you will get 142 Canon items to review :)

AMEX offered me a 30% discount through 26 November 2006 so that makes the deal even better :) You might check if you have a discount offer as well?

Here are two sample screen shots...

This is the smartest use of a credit card that I have heard...

Well, it may or may not be! First of all, congrats to the OP on the new lens and I'm sure my comments do not apply to you. But, for many of us, a credit card points system could leave us in a negative position whether you always pay your balance off in full or not! Here in Canada, most credit card rewards systems give you about a 1% benefit on your purchases, however its a proven fact that if you use your credit card as your front end interface then you will easily spend more than 1% extra than if you were using cash. When you see those bills being handed over and what's left in your wallet, you are just going to think twice about your next purchase and if you really need it. Does this sound familiar, the credit card bill has come in the mail, you are slowing opening it, in your mind anticipating the total and it ALWAYS seems to be more than you thought! You then think, hmmm, maybe I should not have got this or that, or at least not this month. Bottom line is, for most of us, we are going to spend less dealing with cash than credit (even for gas!! - cause you are going to think twice about those extra trips to the corner store..) and we will easily cancel any rewards program. To me, the truly smart way to get that new lens, is a big jar on the dresser and throw in a $10 or $20 bill every week depending what your goal is. At the end of the year, your household bottom-line is going to be further ahead.

Good discussion -- two points:

a. AMEX is not a "traditional" credit card...you must pay your bill in full at the end of the month. It is same as cash to me...AMEX makes its profit from the vendors who allow its use. Other credit cards are similar...only they charge less to the seller and interest on the balance to the buyer. I check my AMEX balance online two or three times a week and try to keep it in a set range of expenses.

b. I am a great beliver in the "sock drawer" savings plan...I put loose change, rebate $$s, and other reimbursements away in this fashion. I saved enough in one year to buy my 30D this way...just takes discipline.

You are correct in that each and everyone of us has our own method to approach spending...when I was a 2LT in the Army years ago my Battalion Commender told me that I should always keep at least two paychecks in my bank account...my wife and I have lived by that philosophy for 42 years now :-)

Wow, thanks to you Jim, I found out how to redeem my points in this way and found out that I've got enough for an STE-2 infrared transmitter. 8)

Our family company uses AMEX for just about everything... We usually rack up 65-90K points a month! At one point we had approximately 580,000 points.

But...*sigh* they are used for airline tickets.
