This is the first I have heard about this viewfinder replacement, I guess you would call it.

It is supposed to make it lighter and easier to see through the viewfinder. B&H has it...and says it is for an EOS 1 or 3. I don't know if a Rebel XT comes under those catogories. Anyone know? And does anyone use the Beattie and what do you think of it? I would like to beable to see clearer through the viewfinder on the Rebel XT.

Thanks! Margie

Here is the quote on it from B&H web-site...

"This Beattie Intenscreen is an interchangeable focusing screen compatible with all Canon EOS-1 series film and digital cameras, as well as the EOS-3 camera. This Matte/Fresnel screen features a horizontal split image for manual focus assist, AF brackets, and is ideal for general use with bright lenses, f/5.6 or brighter. The lack of contrast and image definition with some original focusing screens can make it difficult, if not impossible, to bring a subject into sharp focus. An Intenscreen will increase image brightness by 1 to 1.5 stops, making it easier to focus on a distant subject, especially when using a telephoto lens. "

No, the Rebel isn't an EOS 1 series camera. They're talking the EOS 1, 1N or 1V film cameras (maybe the 1Ds, too).

I don't think the Beattie screen is available for the Rebel, but here is one that is:

I have used IntenScreens on medium and large format cameras, but have generally found that screens in 35mm format bodies were pretty good as is. If you do alot of manual focus you might find it beneficial.

Thank you ! I will look into that one...It sounds like you have not used it. Do you know anyone who has? How did they like it?

Anyone else ever use one?

I haven't used it, but I read about it in one of these online forums, probably this one or DPR. If you do a search you might be able to come up with the original postings.

The Beattie focusing screen works great, but it only fits a 1D series camera: 1D, 1Ds, 1DmkII, 1DmkIIN, 12dsMKII. These cameras and the 5D are designed for user replaceable focusing screens and are very easy to change. I like the split screen and added brightness for manual focusing and the grid lines on the Beatie for framing and keeping the horizon level/verticals vertical. The replacement screens from Canon have only some of the same functionality and are much less expensive.

For all of the cropped Canon cameras, replacement focusing screens are available, but they tend to be a bit pricier and much harder to replace. They are available at

The Haoda site has a PDF describing how to change your focusing screen for your style camera. Because these cameras were not designed for user replaceable focusing screens, no alternate screens are available from Canon.

If you use these new screens, will it affect the exposure readings of the built in meter at all?

I believe it does.
