I shot this Chaffinch, I believe he's called in English, in Finnish "Peippo", with 7D in the beautiful evening light last monday. Shutter 1/800, ISO 640.

Nice shot Ari and welcome to the forum.

Nice shot Ari and welcome to the forum.

Thank you Airedale1 :) This jackdaw is from same session. These are quite interesting looking creatures when you get close enough and on same eye level.

Thanks Airedale. Glad that you like it. Those are freshly hatched olive ridley turtles trying to make their way to the sea and we were a group of volunteers trying to ensure they make it safely to the sea against the odds.
By the way, I made a typo with the lens details and wrote 44 mm. It's too obvious and I am leaving it at that.

Well after a few months of dithering (300 f4, 100-400, 120-300) I plumped for the 400mm f5.6. Having already bought the 70-200 f2.8 IS mkII I seem to be following Silverfox's trajectory!
My first impressions are that it is pretty sharp but not as good as the 70-200mm (which is fabulous.) It is however sharp at f5.6 which really pleases me.
Another point is that the minimum focus distance of 3.5m is a lot less restrictive than I thought. I guess I did not really measure out how near that distance is.
IS ruins us. I am really having to concentrate to get photographs without any shake.
Initially, I like a few others got the feeling that the lens focussed more accurately close up than far away. I have attached a couple of photos. One, the feeder waiting for a bird (shot through a double glazed window) and a 100% crop. Not too bad for sharpness under rough and ready conditions - I am using a 7D which is pretty searching with 100% crops.
However when I shot a chimney stack about 1/4mile away, it did not look very sharp.
When I investigated further, heat haze was the problem. We are getting really sunny weather here in Scotland just now, and it had not occurred to me that heat haze would be the cause in April. It all became very clear when I used live view 10x. The image shimmered like mad!
I quickly tried the Kenko 1.4x and 2.0x mc4 dx teleconverters. At a first glance, I think that they are usable. Autofocus does not happen if it is too dark or the subject is near. If the subject is a bit farther away, and it is bright then it operates. I may post on this one again.

A couple of bird shots from the duck pond. It was nice and bright so it was 1/1250th, 400 iso and f5.6. Again the second one is a 100% crop on a 7D. Standard jpegs straight from the camera. I would have liked the 100% crop to be a bit sharper, but I realise that at f5.6 you do not have a great depth of focus for a duck on the diagonal.

pocanontn,

I highly suggest getting the the below economical monopod and tilt head in your area and you will be just fine. You will also benefit from the monopod below when using the 70-200 MKII beast during any prolonged outings or sporting events up in the stands. :p
