I only know because they're closely related to our red-bellied woodpeckers. I wanted to go out to the Yuma area to try to catch some while I was in San Diego but the news reports of the trouble in the area caused me to not go out there.

They drink all the nectar out of my hummingbird feeders :) It was a while before I realized that and wondered where the nectar was all going (hummers have a high metabolism, but they don't drink THAT much). Their balancing antics to get to it are pretty funny. I've driven through Yuma often on the way to San Diego. It's known for being HOT.

That's odd, the red-bellys don't go after the nectar here but that may be because they bogart on the sapsucker tree wells. ;)

Pardon the momentary break in the thread (this was with the Sigma 100-300) ...

Not a great image, but you get the idea :p

Here's the red-belly. Not my best shot with the 400 but some nice bokeh. ;) Seems all my really good shots of the red-belly are with the 100-400.

Thanks Daniel. I'd say that 90% of the time my bird shots are in a large local park called Golden Gate Park and the rest along the coastline, both of which are about 5-10 minutes away. I have a general idea of where the certain birds are and just wait around for a bit.
