how far are you guys from the subjects? i have been planning to go to the zoo(bronx) for the longest time and i only have this lens and the next one would be a 50mm and 11-16, will i have a problem composing?

because when i take pictures of some birds to practice with.... it seems that even when they are about 30 feet away, they are just about right in the frame, then i was thinking, what if im taking a picture of a large mammal or like an elephant, will my distance have to be like 150feet away to get the whole body?

thanks

I find that my 400 is a bit long for most zoo work (although one could compose some nice portraits with it). I tend to bring my Sigma EX 100-300mm f/4 when I do the zoo.

If it is all you have, however, bring it! I'm sure you'll find some good subjects. I love the Bronx Zoo.

My favorite zoo lens is a 70-200. Plus I carry a fast normal prime for interior shots.
In my opinion the 400 is too long for most zoo photographs, except for the huge zoos (like San Diego).

I second the opinion above from Mike, a 70-200 will be great for a Zoo trip. The 400 is tooo long :D

pick up a cheap Canon 55-250. they are $200 NEW right now. and they fill that spot nicely and cheaply.
not the high quality of the 400 f5.6L but its a great zoo lens IMO.
