I'm now financially ready to pull the trigger on this lens or the 300/4 IS. My main concern is maximum magnification. Did you use extension tubes to achieve this shot or is this the native .12x maximum magnification? -Matt G

Just the lens, hand held at f5.6, 1/1600 ISO 640, spot metering on a 50D, then cropped in photoshop.

Oct 09, 2011 10:36 | #2114 I finally got my first real chance to shoot with my new TC (Kenko 1.4x Pro 300 DGX) with the 400 f/5.6. While a few of you have already shared your findings, thought I will share mine too with some shots. I deliberately chose this time of the day as I wanted to test for low light conditions. These were taken handheld under at sunset, so my shots were a mixed bag of spot-on (50-60%) & missed focus (10-20%) and motion-blurred ones (20-30%). I did not have my Better Beamer & Speedlite, else the motion-blurred ones could have been reduced with higher shutter speeds. But overall, I found the 400+TC combination very useable, even though there is a minor penalty on IQ.
2. AF was reasonably fast too, as fast as the lens alone in good light almost and quite useable in low light. Noticeable hunting kicked in only in extremely low light.
