Some shots from the large nesting island at High Island near Galveston. Amazing to all these nesting birds

Sorry to be a pain, but can someone please confirm the following: using either a 1.4TC or 2TC I am going to have to use manual focus? How much is this a problem, at what distance does infinity focus arrive? I am thinking about using this lens for Motorsport, there is not much time for focusing!

Ian.

Using a 7D with the 400 f/5.6 lens and either Canon TC will require MF, as AF only works with the 7D on lenses up to aperture 5.6. You lose one stop of aperture by fitting the 1.4 TC to the lens (so f/8 at best). Use the 2x TC and you lose another full stop of aperture meaning, in all honesty, you'd have to be shooting in very good light and have lots of time to manually focus. The 2x TC isn't really designed for use with the 400 5.6, much more useful with Canons fast super teles, e.g. 300mm and 400mm f/2.8s where you'd still be able to use max aperture f/5.6 and your 7D would still AF.
Some non reporting 3rd party TCs from Kenco for example (those which don't relay their existance to the camera) can trick the AF into working at f/8 on the 7D but results are sporadic from what I've read (excessive hunting for focus etc)
HTH.

I rented this lens for our road trip to Yellowstone. It took me a day or so to get acclimated to it but I found a beanbag was really helpful for out of the window shots. It was great for shooting the wildlife as well :) These were taken at the Grizzly & Wolf Rescue center.

I have used a canon 1.4x TC with this lens using MF only. I use this combo for shooting moon shots on a tripod. Not easy to manually focus but it works.

Very cool! I'm going up to Yellowstone in 2 weeks for vacation. How was the weather? That is an awesome looking bear.

We were there in May and we had a couple of snowstorms, then beautiful days upwards of 70 degrees. Pack warm & cool clothes :) May/June is awesome in Yellowstone (have been 3 times) as all the baby wildlife is out.

I managed to capture some nice Red Grouse photographs last week in the Yorkshire Dales:

The 5DIII's AF was confidence inspiring!
