Laurie, check out the new sigma 120-300 f2.8 too. It has OS and takes teleconverters well. Reliability issues remain an open question. I have the 400 f5.6 lens and it is sharp and light but the f stop makes it limiting to shoot when available light is fading.

Hey guys!

Looked at the last couple of pages and love the pictures!

I'm thinking about purchasing this lens.

I have the 70-200mm lens it's great but not enough reach for birds. I like to take pics of them in my garden or the local forest.
I might save up for this one or maybe the 100-400mm. What do you think?

The 400 and the 100-400 both have very loyal followings. Which do you want more: that last bit of sharpness or the versatility of the zoom and IS? Before my 400 I used a Tamron 70-300 for wildlife, and found that I was usually shooting at 300mm with high shutter speeds, so I went with the 400 prime. No regrets.

He-he. I look in on this thread regularly to judge the IQ of the shots. I have the 100-400 and I am interested in seeing how much more sharp the prime is at 400. If there is enough difference, I would get the 400 for birds and the likes. So far... well... I have to say... I don't see much difference over the 100-400. Over to you folks to post the shots to prove me wrong...

I'm favoring this one because it's a prime. I have the 70-200 for zoom. Ok I miss 200-400 but that's ok I guess.
I probably won't miss IS because I mostly use tripod.
(this was shot with my 70-200, I did crop a whole lot of the pic though: http://www.flickr.com …s/sparklepics/8411068285/ (external link))

Which teleconverters have you all found to work best with this lens in terms of IQ and AF?

The temperature was below zero that day, maybe that is why :)
