Will the Canon lens work fine with a teleconverter 1.4 or 2.0 to get more reach? Thanks, Fabrizio 1.4 should work, not sure about 70D Iain

Will the Canon lens work fine with a teleconverter 1.4 or 2.0 to get more reach? Thanks, Fabrizio As regards TCs: the 1.4 on the 400mm f/5.6 takes the widest aperture down to f/8. It will only AF on the 5dIII or 1 series bodies, not 70D unless you use liveview which isn't much use for wildlife in motion. The 2xTC will reduce the widest aperture to f/9 so even worse. Best not to bother with TCs on the 400 5.6, to get you closer, crop images which are taken with the bare lens. The lens is excellent, you'll enjoy it.

Thank you The 'problem' is lack of AF at f/8 with the set up you're talking about so no, a tripod wont solve that. Depending on what you're shooting, it may be possible to use the 1.4TC + 400mm on a tripod and either focus manually or AF using liveview (assuming your camera has liveview). My advice though would be to forget about the TC and just use the lens on the camera. If you need to be closer then either use your legs or crop the images on your computer. The next is at f/11 1/2000 sec ISO 3200: IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/gQgS9n
