having a tough time deciding between this or the version 1 of the 100-400..

The lens works fine with 1.4 and still have auto focus (on 7D and 5D3 I don't think it will work on 70D though). On 2.0 you will lose the auto focus.

Sorry for the silly question, but do you mean that it can't be used at all or the AF doesn't work with a 70D?

you can still use it just without AF

IMO 100-400 is a great lens but you will find yourself using only 400mm portion.

But with IS.
Anyway after proving the macro 100mm I'd prefer a fixed lens; it's way easier to focus manually, or at least in my opinion.

yeah IS is nice but prime is sharper. then again I haven't test out the new 100-400
