Are you using Kenko extension tubes with the 400mm 5.6 in order to decrease the MFD? If so, doesn't that make this already slow lens that much slower, thus making focusing difficult? Also, what camera body are you using and are you adding a 1.4x teleconverter?

Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 II -- 35mm format 3. Olympus E-M1 with 40-150mm zoom + 1.4X TC. -- micro 4/3 format Thanks
