Finally got my 400 5.6 yesterday. I can say it is going to take some getting used to. I sold my 100-400 in order to get this. The lack of IS is the main thing. I am finding that I get better results if I use Tv, instead of Av like I'm used to. It's been overcast since I got the lens. I got this shot yesterday using Av mode. The sky is not real, but it looks decent for a fake sky I think, or does it? The original was all grey from the clouds......

Thanks Black Fox, I have the same questions. My understanding is that with our cameras (40D and 50D), they will not auto focus at f/8. I plan to get one and use it for long, stable shots while in Africa, but am assuming that the autofocus wil be disabled when using my 400 5.5 in combination with the 1.4.

On non 1 series cameras the camera will not try to AF if the reporting aperture is higher than f/5.6. So if you are using a 400 f/5.6 with a reporting 1.4x TC like the Canon or Sigma, non 1 series cameras will not AF. If you use a non-reporting TC like some Kenkos and Tamrons then the lens will attempt to AF. The more light you have the better your AF results will be.

I have a non-reporting Tamron 1.4x and all the focus points except the center one work. Here's a shot after I finished adjusting the combo. Not bad for $75.

I think you have just saved me the Embarasment of buying a d300 or a d2x!!!! i have a few nikon lenses and want a sports body/lens so i was thinking Nikon. but i think that the 400+1,4 on my ds will deliver what i need. however at f8 he shutter wont be the fastest in the world, will separation close to infinity still be good?

This was shot on a tripod wide open (5.6). I struggle hand holding with the TC attached at a static object. I'm hoping to get out this weekend and see what I can do with it.

well i can only do with a monopod... sunny 16 at f8 gives me 250 so that should be alright with a monopod ... could go at iso 400 as well

edit: the alternative is 6000 euro (400 f4) or Nikon....
