On non 1 series cameras the camera will not try to AF if the reporting aperture is higher than f/5.6. So if you are using a 400 f/5.6 with a reporting 1.4x TC like the Canon or Sigma, non 1 series cameras will not AF. If you use a non-reporting TC like some Kenkos and Tamrons then the lens will attempt to AF. The more light you have the better your AF results will be.

can you please elaborate on which actual T.C to purchase ,theres so many out there and so many conflicting tales ,i want one that will primarily autofocus with the 400mmL on a 40d body without the need for taping the pins of flaffing about ,i need to here from someone that has x-y-z combo that actually works

changed systems to MFT olympus omd1-E.M1X , Olympus 100-400 zuiko .., xiaoyi 42.5mm f1.8 . four thirds mmm-2 ,, four thirds 11-22.. and pergear 60mm f2.8 macro

Black Fox, you beat me to the question AGAIN. (Well, except for the "flaffing" part, that's a new one... :D)

Anyway, I was out looking at the Tamrons at B&H, couldn't sort out which model might work. I also notice that although it might work on some lenses, I couldn't tell if they would also work on my 70-200 f4. I'm searching for a compatibility chart....

The black Tamron models do not report, this one here:

I have one and it has been good to me when I have used it. Since I have a Sigma 150-500 I don't use it quite as much as before, but I am usually happy with the results as long as the light is good.

African ringneck? It should be a turtledove, not a parrot...;)

Sorry costo, I should have been more clear. That is an African Ringneck Dove, or AKA Ringneck Dove, not a turtle dove (or a parrot for that matter).

I guess I shouldn't have stated it in question form, as I raise ringnecks in 5 differnet color variations. I was more curiuos about where you saw it as they are native to some areas, such as Africa and Asia, but domseticated in other areas. I was thinking maybe you were on a shoot in some grand location.....

BTW, very different neck pattern/banding on a turtle dove.

Sorry, hijack over.

Still learning my 400 5.6. So far I'm liking my old 100-400 more, and debating on going back. Here is some of the best I've gotten so far with this one though. The hawk is badly framed, but full frame. I was driving and seen him on a fence post stopped and got these as it was taking off. The heron on the other hand I like a lot, although the bokeh is quite odd on it. Slightly cropped.

Methodical - Brilliant as always.

Andy - Great Heron. You may not have framed the hawk correctly, but you certainly still nailed your focus. Very sharp. Don't give up on this lens, it's a beauty.

Hey Andy, the killdeer is great. Also really like the buzzard with the blurred out bird in the background, perfect catch.

Thanks. I almost edited out the bird, but then figured, nah, why not just keep it. The killdeer had some grass in front of it, and i actually cloned over the left leg to the right. Legs look ok, not too sure about the chest on the bird. It's keepable I suppose, :)
