Lens transport question

I am curious, I just got the 70-200 f2.8 lens and the 20D, I have the canon back pack also, is it ok to carry the lens connected to the body in the pack or should you always disconnect the lens and carry them seperated?

Just dont want to damage anything..

I always keep some lens attached to my 20D just in case I need to use it unexpectedly. Better to have the less than ideal lens attached than no lens when you only have a few seconds to capture the image.
