Hi there,

I plan on purchasing a replacement lens for my 18-55 kit lens on my Rebel XT and came across the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 EX DG wich would be pretty versatile for me. I can buy it at a fair price :

Has anyone used this lens and could provide feedback on it?

Thanks a bunch!

Marie-Andrée.

I have the 24-70 f2.8 EX DG and it is a fine lens. Not sure about the 28-70 lens, sounds like it might be the older version of the one I have.

The one I have is really well built and the quality is very good also. So yes I would probably go for one.

Sigma is a very confusing company. The 28-70 f/2.8 is a pro level (EX) DG meaning it's coated for digital cameras....so it can't really be that old. On the other hand the 24-70 f/2.8 is also an EX DG so it's not that old either. Then they have the 28-70 f/2.8-4.5 non-EX DG, and a 24-60 f/2.8 EX DG. Some are internal focusing, some are not. None have HSM.

So much duplication and lack of true differentiation really makes me wanna steer clear of Sigma.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

I love my 28-70 f2.8 EX (non)DG.
If I were looking for a replacement though I'd be having a serious look at the Tamron 28-75 f2.8

Marie,

I have the 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG and it works very well. The 28-70 is an anterior version but the quality of the lens is equal excelence. The main difference with mine is in the wide side (24 mm) and the Macro ability, but basically pretty close.

Actually the price of the 24-70 EX is around $350. I don´t know if you can afford it, but if you get a bargain price for the 28-70; then should be ok.

One thing you must considered also is that both lenses are a chunk of glass, I means they are heavy (750 gr almost).

The others alternatives for the kit lens are the above mentioned Tamron 28-75 (lighter) and also some different focals as : Sigma & Tamron around 17-50 and also Sigma 17-70

Cheers
Juan

I got the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 EX DC to replace my kit lens focal range and I am very happy with it.
