35L on FF

so i purchased the 35L about a month ago because i knew that would be a great walk around lens with my 30D (~50mm). i sold my 24-70 to help fund for this lens.

now that i unexpectedly went FF with my 5D, i find the 35L really wide as a walkaround. but man...this lens is sooo sharp and detailed that i can crop pictures immensely and still have very acceptable quality. i was thinking about selling to help re-fund for a new 24-70 but now im debating if its worth getting rid of.

i admit that i miss the convenience of the zoom, but speed and sharpness of the 35L has spoiled me. i know i can't have both due to money, so now my question is...should i sell the 24-70 because it would be more convenient for me to have for the events i shoot or should i purchase a 50mm or 85mm to help cover some aread between this lens and my 70-200 that is on its way.

I'd say keep the 35L. You will regret selling that lens. It's one of the best lenses Canon makes. And I personally love it for low light indoor shooting on a FF body.

Why not pick up an EF 85 f/1.8?

My guess is that the 35/85 combo will cover about 95% of your shooting needs. And they're very compact so I don't think you loose much in terms of portability.

Keep the 35. Get a 50 or 85 and enjoy. I think, if you purchased this lens after Oct. 15, '06, you can get another lens, and take the double rebates.

That's what I would do. Why sell good glass? Seems pointless to me. Some have also had issues with the 24-70, and that's why I don't have one. I would much rather a new prime, anyway.

Forget the zoom you won't get that speed (and the concomitant bokeh) and sharpness from it. Don't fal into the trap of sticking with what was habit or being drawn back to it because that's what it was.

so i have the 70-200 coming in...obviously 85mm falls in that region. i want to get most for my dollar and be wise on spending. now my question is 50mm or 85mm? or should i just not buy any lens at all, save money, and purchase the zoom later? i just dont think ill have the money intime for the rebates.

Well, you'd think the 70-200IS and the 85/1.8 would be redundant....until you consider the size and weight of the two lenses. the 70-200IS is a beast. Heck, the 35 and 85 combined are more compact than the 70-200IS. But there is definately something to be said for just waiting and determining what you really need. Personally, the only thing I use the 70-200IS for is sports. I won't carry it around for much else.

in my opinion...thats what you should do. that way you can use those 2 wonderful lenses and really get to know them and how they work. Then you can decide what you feel you are missing.

Oh, is not getting the zoom an option? I definately think you'd be better off with the dual-prime combination for starters. Saves you about $1,200 too.

Well a zoom will traditionally will give you more versatility as a walk around.

However, the 35L is defintely a good one to carry around in your low light situations that you mentioned in another thread.

I'd say buy and sell accordingly. Don't keep a lens you don't think you wn't use enough, even if its one of the best out there.

I think you are assuming the 35L is on the rebate list. I have never seen this lens on the rebate list and doubt I ever will. But I could be wrong. It's always sold out.

Nope, I was taking into account that the 70-200 2.8LIS is on the rebate list...which is what the OP ordered. So, that combined with one of the other lenses qualifies.
