5D how to tell how many images shot?

I have a new 5D that started to take images number 0001. After it hit 0125 it jumped to 7685. I think I may have switched cards, but now it keeps progressing from there. How can I tell how many images I have taken? Could this indicate that something is wrong with the camera? I use the zoom browser to load images and there really is no rhyme or reson for why the number jumped as far as I can tell. In fact, I was in the 8000 number set when I finished off with my rebel. Could it be that the camera is refurbished? I bought from Amazon as Amazon the merchant. I'm a little worried.

THanks!

there isn't a way of checking, only on the 1 series cameras. Well nohting short of sending it to Canon.

There isn't anything wrong, probably inserting a unformated card did it.

Did you happen to insert a card you were using in another camera? If so, the 5D would've just picked up the number where the other left off.

If you are positive that file number jumped from 0125 to 7685, it is easy to fix.

7685 – 125 = 7560

Subtract 7560 from your current picture number and you’ll have the real number.

There is a way to set folder/picture number to ANY value but it really means nothing..

As mentioned before, if you use a card that was previously used in a different camera, your 5D will continue in that pic secuence. It's annoying that it will not keep a steady count. You can reset to the previous number (or any number really) by taking a card that has pics in it, and delete all but one, and rename it by just changing the number to the desired one. Put it in the cam and take a pic. Take the card out and verify if the recently taken pic followed the secuence of the previous shot.

You can reset the numbering on a 350D/Rebel XT (or ANY Canon dSLR), but you need a card reader to do it...

1. Format the CF card with your computer so it has no files/folders on it.
2. Switch on your camera without a CF card in place.
3. Go into your camera's menu and set file numbering to "auto reset"
3. Put the newly formatted CF card into the camera and take a picture
4. Go into the camera menu and change the file numbering back to "continuous"
5. Take out the CF card and put it into card reader - you should see image 0001, within folder 100CANON
6. Rename the 0001 part of the image number to 2524
7. Rename the 100CANON folder to 125CANON
8. Put the CF card back into the camera and take a picture
9. The picture you just took should be 2525
Important to change the folder name to match the file it contains. And also important to change file numbering to "reset" with no CF card in place - otherwise the camera will still continue to number from whatever is on the card.

THanks for the feedback. It probably is the card I was using. I never format my cards. I'm just a bit leery because when I first ordered my 5D from Amazon they sent a 20D is a 5D box. Imagine how upset I was. They sent a replacement very quickly, but it makes me wonder what's going on in that warehouse they ship from, ya know?

Formatting your cards is better than deleting images!
There is an article about that but I cannot find the link right now..

the data is stored in the exif of your photos and the rule is X1*65535+X2 for the 5D. eg:

Unknown (0093)3,9 : 18,2,8384,0,0,0,4,0,3
---------------^x1--^x2------------

2 x 65535 + 8384 gives the shutter acutation count for this data

Hopefully this should tell you how many pictures have actually been taken :).

That only functions reliably for the 1 series. Try it - take some pics, remove the card, take a few more, re-insert the card, take some more, and see what that tells you. Also try changing/creating new folders. It needs to cope with all those conditions to be reasonably reliable.

That's no good! Even with X1 being "one" and X2 being "zero", a new camera would show 65535 exposures!

The EXIF for the 5D is littered with "unknown" entries all reading 65535, I would guess it refers to the camera model.

Well, im just saying , i looked on the net and it said that rule applied to the 5d and 1d series. Don't shoot the messenger...

X1 doesn't have to be a whole number... and X2 could be a minus number

you never know...
