Went out today to take some pics and during PP I noticed what appears to be some colour casting (not sure what else to call it), as per the pics. It appears to be where the bright light meets the dark.

Now is this due to my lens? (18-55mm kit lens with 400D).

Thats Chromatic Aberration it should be fairly common on the kit lens as it is not constructed very well. However it can be present on some better glass aswell. The best thing to do is select it in PS and desaturate it. Like this:

I can't see it on this screen (the closeup pic didnt load) but it's definitely CA or Purple Fringing. It's common on cheap lenses, and sometimes shows up on high end glass as well (but rarely, and usually minimized).

You can reduce it before post processing just by stopping down when you have a lot of light like this.

OK on a refresh the pics all loaded. And to be honest I wouldn't stress over that. For being the cheap kit lens, that's not bad at all. My Tokina 12-24 can get a lot worse and it cost quite a bit more than the kit.

Pixel peeping magnifies flaws that would never show up in a real print, or would be negligible if they did.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm being a bit hard on my kit lens eh?

illy......what exactly did you do to get rid of it? Just selected that area and desaturated it !?

Yep. It depends on the size of the picture, on the crop you displayed I used a feathering of 4pixels, selected it with the polygonal lasso tool and then desaturated it about 60-70%. I think you are being a bit hard on the kit lens, although it can display some fantastic results when stopped to f/11/

Yeap. If you paid $1200 then I can understand close inspection but it's sort of a giveaway lens (almost) so you can't expect...well anything. lol.

But on the plus side you identified a problem and learned about it.

Good point cdi-ink.

Is a lack of sharpness also an issue with the kit lens as opposed to better lenses?

It is. However I have heard that when one stops the kit lens down to f/11 the IQ is difficult to tell apart from the 17-40L. Have a look at some of the images this guy manages to make with the kit lens by stopping it down and using graduated ND filters to control the exposure:

illy is right the 18-55 isn't known for being a good lens although in perfect conditions and perfect lighting you can get some great pictures with it. If you get the fringing like that shown in the image open in photoshop and go to Hue/Saturation there you select the magenta color then you play around with the sliders untill it ig gone.

Just another shutterbug.

Some programs like RawShooter Premium (and Essentials too I think) have an automatic CA reduction set, you may want to investigate in fixing it digitally.
