New member, not sure if this is the proper Forum but if this is the right place:
I am interested in purchasing the Canon Digital Rebel XTi / Canon 400D.
It seems the going price is around $700 but for the body only. Some of the descriptions implies that a lens is included. Confusing.
Since this is a new model, is anybody aware of its performance and if similar performance is available from other Canon models?
I would appreciate some feedback. thanks.

There are several POTN members who own that camera.
I hope they’ll chime in to answer your particular questions.

You can find in depth review HERE (external link).

Hi,
I came from a P/S and the Rebel XTi is my first DSLR, bought this camera about 3 weeks now and i must say it's big difference coming from a P/S. totally loved it and enjoying the capabilities of it. Although i sometimes wish i bought the 30D, but since I'm a newbie to Digital Photography it will be my learning DSLR. and there's a lot of lens selection for the XTi too.I'm pretty sure you'll be satisfied with camera if your on the budge like me.

Just purchased a 400D two weeks ago in New Zealand. Got body + EF-S 18-55 + 55-200 USM lens for $1388 (equivalent) if that's any help. Don't think I was ripped off and am very happy with results so far. As this is my first DSLR it will take time but I like the Canon technology. Also my first time on POTN; glad to be here!

welcome!

I am also from PnS and the Xti is one heck of a jump!

unfortunatly mine is plagued and is with Canon for warranty....maybe wait for them to fix some bugs before jumping on it? I personally almost regret not getting the 30D over the XTi.

I bought the 400D as a "Kit" (lens included) - would advise to just buy the body and get a decent lens as the included one is not very good. I went to the extreme of buying a Canon 500mm f/4 L IS (mega-bucks!!) for my bird photography. I am very pleased with the set-up and have posted elsewhere that I am getting results as good as and in some cases better than friends using a 20D or 30D. I am hoping that a 40D will appear in the near future. People have decried the 400D for various reasons - small size (suits my small hands, but I also bought the battery grip which makes it easier to handle), plastic rather then magnesium alloy body (I like plastic, my life is surrounded by it!), only 3 fps on burst mode instead of 5 or more fps (I find 3 fps adequate and since I shoot only in RAW it fills a CF card in no time).

The 10 mp sensor is good (despite what the pixel bashers say!) and the sensor cleaning feature seems to function O.K. (and will probably become standard on other Canon models). I would like to have spot metering but am managing without it.

For the price it is a good camera, just don't get paranoid about the "grown ups" describing it as "entry level"!!

Canon 400D, (1DMkIII pre-ordered), 500mm f/4 L IS, 70-210 EF, 1.4x TC, BG-E3 grip, Manfrotto 055 + Wimberley II head, Lowepro Lenstrekker 600AW backpack, Crumpler bag.

I would say it's body only. B&H sells the silver body only ($700)

I got stuff for taking pictures. :o When things are unclear - It's time to refocus.

I have not seen the silver body "in the flesh" but from photos in reviews it makes the camera look "cheap & nasty" - sorry, didn't intend offending anyone who owns the silver 400D!!

I agree....silver bodies make me picture PnS cameras....for some reason a black PnS doesn't sit right with me...and a silver DSLR doesn't either.

Greetings and welcome!

I just got my Xti two weeks ago as a gift with the kit lens. I'm a total photography "newbie", so the the 18-55mm kit lens suits me fine...however, I've already run into situations where I would like to reach out farther towards the subject. I anticipate that I'll be purchasing something along the lines of a 70-200mm in the future and possibly Canon's nice 100mm prime macro lens.

Even with the kit lens, I've been able to take some incredible pictures that far exceed anything I ever did with my P / S camera.

Best of luck as you make your decision!
