IMO

Primes: Probably the Canon 50mm f/1.4 or if you have a lot of room and/or want head & shoulder shots only the Canon 85mm f1.8 (you could spend an awful lot more and get the f/1.2 versions of these lenses :-))

Zoom: Canon 24-70L f/2.8

Of course you can spend less but without knowing your budget...

The 50 1.4 gets my vote. Great lens for the money.

Portraits on a crop body ? zooms 17-40; 24-70 ish, 24-105, 70-200 family, are all great.

a prime gives great IQ too, consider a 50mm - either one is good, but f/1.4 version is better.

You don't have to spend huge cash to get a good lens for portraits, but the classical portrait length in a crop body is 30-85mm taking crop factor field of view into account. 50mm is just about perfect.

The 50mm f/1.4 is an excellent lens for portraiture.

Thanks for everyone's help. Right now, I have a 80-200mm 3.5-6.3 macro. It is a Tamron. I have taken some portrait shots with it and I will try to post one on the people board.

I just thought that maybe I needed something else for the portraits.

Thanks again.

I replaced myrebel kit lens with the sigma 17-70 2.8....very reasonable for that type of lens and worth every penny. It is my main lens indoor or outdoor, it's great!

This lens is incredible.

A lot of people are replacing the kit lens with the Sigma. It's a nice lens. I'd still use the prime for portraits, though. The bokeh and overall IQ is better.

Shows that I should read more than just the title before posting LOL

I agree 100% with the 50 for portrait, although I am happy with the nifty fifty, I have heard great things about the 50 1.4 and the 85 mm 1.8 ( which will be my next lens)
