I'm not sure about these, I found an amazing location today but these don't really do it justice, however they are my favorites form today. C&C appreciated, I will definatly be taking a few more trips back to this spot until I get it right.

#2 has potential, but it's really going to take a dramatic sky for it to be a winner, IMO. That is some nice rugged terrain you found there. I'd love to take a climb on those rocks.

Or a long exposure night shot.

I agree with JT. You've got some real interesting elements here. Fantastic rock formations, interesting dead trees, sparse grass, the ocean. The challenge is to captures these in an interesting, dramatic manner. Wait for better light or sky conditions and focus in on one or two of these elements. Take lots of images. I sure you'll end up with a number of winners. Good luck.

Joe

I think you have two keen pictures. I altered these a bit in LAB space to try to bring out some of the shadows and a little color in the vegetation. If these were shot in RAW, they would have quite a bit if information to work with.

If you are close to the spot, it could provide quite a few worthwhile scenes in the future.

J T thanks for the comment, I agree they are both lacking something. I spent hours climbing over and around the rocks exploring the area before I came across this particular spot. Next time I will head straight there with a few shots already in mind.

Thanks Johan I was thinking the same thing, I would like to get out there when the moon is close to being full. It would be a bit dangerous getting down there in the dark, but it is doable.

Canonada, thanks for the comment, next time should be more productive.

Thanks jdkeck that is a definate improvment. They were shot in RAW but I wasn't happy enough with either of these shots to spend much time in PP. I am curious to know why you switched to Lab color to edit this? What is the advantage over RGB? I occasionally switch to Lab during a conversion to black and white but that is about it.

I've been studying and trying to learn the PPing techiques that Dan Margulis, "Photoshop LAB Color". I'm interested in this technique is mainly for canyon scenes, but the colors and tones in your pictures seemed like good subject matter. The PPing took a few minutes to complete. Both pictures were treated the same way, the A and B channels were just rotated about the center point about 10% ccw as straigh lines. The L channel was adjusted to lighten the deepest shadows and stil keep the contrast in the mid tones, a classic S curve. I bought the book but you can get the info here, http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=18203 (external link) .

The LAB technique is easy to do. Since you have the RAW images, you might want to play with it a bit.

Again, very nice pictures.

Jeff

Photographs are records of life. Pity they don't make music when you put them in a record player. :p

Thanks ags007,

Thanks for the info and link Jeff. I will check it out, it sounds like a very interesting technique and it looks to give some good results.
