It worked fine earlier today and then when I tried to take a picture tonight this happened. It happens with and without flash. I thought it was the shutter at first (I've taken about 16,000 pictures) but I have no idea. Thanks!

hmm....it definately looks like a flash sync problem, but if it's doing that without a flash firing then i'm not really sure.

yeah, that's what I thought too so I did one without the flash. I've done long and short exposures and horizontal and vertical. They all have the same problem.

I wonder if this is a mirror issue... maybe the mirror isn't flipping out/all the way out of the way.

Put your camera in bulb mode and trigger the shutter or active the sensor clean mode then take the lens off and see if the secondary mirror is hanging down.

Looks like a failing shutter. But don't take my word for it.

ok, not sure if this is normal or not. I have it on sensor cleaning mode. It's hard to tell though with the pictures. I'm pretty sure something's wrong with this.

300D sub-mirror assembly failure. Call Canon.

lock the mirror up and take a photo.. if it takes a good picture it's probably the mirror hinge. About $200 to fix.

What do you see through the viewer? Is it a full view of the subject? If so, then its most likely a mirror mechanism problem...

ok, well...i put it back on bulb and held it open and the lower mirror did not go up (like it shows in the picture) so i helped it and it gave it a push up. When I re-clicked the shutter it went up like it should and took a full picture. So far, it's still taking full frames but I'm guessing I should still call because it will probably happen again.
