Is it worth upgrading from the Canon 350D to the Canon 400D. just for the extra 2megapixels, or are there any worthwhile feature improvenments. Thanks
Darryl Baptista

No, not really. I would upgrade your glass first.

IMHO the only reason to upgrade is for the improved focussing with fast (f/2.8 or better) lenses. It's been worth it for me, as my 100mm f/2 now gives much more consistent results at f/2.

Let me join the chorus - no. The next series (20d/30d) or some good lens would be a better bet.

it is worthwhile if you experience problems with the autofocus system of 350d - i did and the upgrade to 400d has really proved to be the solution, other features of 400d like bigger screen, better controls and the dust shaker are all very nice additions, bundled DPP is also better than the older version.

I think it depends whether your motivation is purely photographic (like the puritans here!!) or whether you like a gadget to go along with the photography hobby like me.

Having positioned myself as a hobbyist who likes a new gadget, then the large screen, with all the pre-shot information displayed very brightly and clearly is a very nice touch. Reviewing photo's with friends is much more rewarding experience on the bigger brighter screen, and stops all those friends laughing at the terrible small screen on the 350D (as they have far superior screen on their £150 Canon P&S cameras).

The dust cleaning feature will no doubt help everyone, and the more accurate focusing on the centre AF point with f/2.8 and faster will help a lot too, even for hobbyists.

The extra megapixels are really meaningless, as the largest I ever print is 5x7 inches, and you just don't need them for that.

9 AF points, hmmm. Never really struggled with 7 to be honest.

But that screen is a real winner.......honestly.

I should/shall wait for the 30D replacement. Can you really see any difference with the pics taken on a 350D, 400D, 30D ?

Glass will make a bigger difference if you are just starting out.

Another one here that votes for glass and that is what I'm doing, you have a good camera (base) get the better glass and take some amazing pictures from differen't angles and zooms then upgrade the body...

I figure the mythical 40D when it comes will be my next one, in 2007.

if your gonna upgrade pass the XTi and get the 30D..the XTi would be good if you are just starting out. I just got my 30D on sat. upgraded from the XT. I cant exress how much of a difference just the body build and size makes in comfort and control. plus larger and brighter viewfinder. My XT was GREAT and learned alot. Its just the 30D is soo much easier to handle and use larger lens with it. I am even able to do macro ALOT better now cause of the viewfinder and more balance feel of the camera.
