There can't be a phone call important enough to leave the lens off a camera w/ a child around, better yet w/ dust afloat. Longer the lens is off more opportunity for dust to gather inside the camera and every time you click that shutter more dust is attracted to the staticly charged sensor (glass).

Well Im in Hawaii so if my family calls me late at night (they are 4 hours ahaed), then I think something is wrong.
But I learn my lesson. I called our local Canon service center and they told me to use a microfiber cloth and if that doesnt work, bring it to them and they will do it for free.

I recall hearing some time ago that the silver coating on SLR mirrors is in the exposed/front part of the glass, and not on the back like ordinary mirrors. I'd personally take it to the Canon Service Centre if they'd do it for free.
