Portable Memory

What is the best option for portable memory during an out of town event or for travel? I assume plenty of memory cards is the best option, but are there any portable drives that have some simple interface where you can easily transfer data from them memory card to the portable drive and then resuse the memory card.

Thanks!

That looks like a good one, but without the LCD. Is it available in the US?

I have the Epson P-2000 (there are newer versions). It has the 3.7 inch LCD that is sharp, and it takes RAW and shows them. If you don't need the LCD, there are a lot cheaper alternatives. I just like having something I can see the shots and show them and store them.

I don't know if it's available in the US, and for my needs the LCD is useless.
I only use it when travelling to save CFs content and reuse them.

I never even consider that there was a thing before getting into photography. I'm going to look into one of those myself. I'll need it now that I have the 5D. It kills my 1 gb CF cards, only 55 pictures per with RAW + small JPEG. :(

I use both a Wolverine 80GB FlashPro and a 40GB Smartrax FlashTrax.
The only difference besides drive size is I can see the images and watch movies on the FlashTrax. Also the Wolverine is slightly faster on the card to device transfer speed.

There are many of these devices including Epson, Vosonic, Wolverine, Jobu, Hyperdrive, NexTo, and Delkin just off the top of my head each with several variations. Oh and even a Canon one supposedly.

You want to look for cost, reliability, capacity and transfer speed (card to device is most important) and then look at other features such as seeing the images, file transfers, music, videos etc..

And Suzie you should see how fast a 2GB card gets eaten up on my 1DsMkII

I have the epson p2000. I love the screen.

But if I were to get one now I would get the wolverine because it's cheap. $250.

if you dont care about being able to view images on the device itself, then I would recommend the Hyperdrive. I have one with a 60gb Seagate drive, and it works great during long shoots away from a computer. It can back up a gig in a little more than a minute, and the rechargeable batteries last an entire night without problem. Nothing more than a basic LED screen though, so dont expect to view your photos on the device

I have one of the wolverine flashpro 60gb as well, and the cost is on the low side. It's pretty low frills in terms of features, but that's what I was looking for. It just basically copies the files from your cards to the HD. Nothing much can go wrong in terms of settings and user error.

If you are looking for something with a screen to view pictures, plays music and videos, you might look into the Creative Zen Vision W. Don't have any personal experience with it, but the package is quite attractive. It's mainly marketed as a video and music playback unit, but it has a CF slot built in and can copy files to the HD.

A new "Creative Labs Zen Vision 60Gb" model is out [for example: for $400 in B&H].
Question is, how reliable is it ?

Also search ebay for digimate
the ii and iii versions are good (I have the ii); the original cannot handle cf cards over 1gb.
