Buying dilemma

I've heard it preached over and over - get glass first, upgrade the body last. Well, I have an XT and no significant glass (long story, don't ask) and about $2000 to play with. I could upgrade to the D30 and get the 70-200 f/4L...and then use my double rebate to add the 85 f/1.8. Or, I can keep the XT and buy all glass.

I'm really lending toward the D30 because of the additional ISO options and the sturdier body.

But, I'm open to suggestions...maybe

thats a toss up. I was just in same boat..get myself a 10-20mm UWA or a 30D
I ended up getting the 30D and I am soooooo pleased with it. The body and controls and everything about it are sooooooooo nice.
Its just you said you dont have any decent glass yet so thats a tough choice to make.

I had the 70-200 f/4 L but I sold it to get the F/2.8. I must have gotten a lemon because it was really soft. Anyway, I'm starting over on glass.

That would be a downgrade. Remember, there's a D30 and a 30D -- the D30 came out a few years ago.

without question, get the glass. You'll be able to buy a 30D at a big discount in a year if you really want that.

The body of the XT is surprisingly sturdy - I've beat the c**p out of mine and it is none the worse for wear. I've skied with it, sailed with it - I don't baby it whatsoever.

That money put into glass would be well worth it. The IQ difference, the sensor difference between the two cameras is not really all that significant.

I have a 400D which I use mostly with a 500mm f/4 L (mostly shooting wildlife, especially birds). I am getting results as good as, and in some cases better then, friends using a 20D or 30D. The one thing I would like to have is spot metering. Go for the lens first.

I am holding out, fingers crossed, for the appearance of the 40D (next year?).
