First attempt at high ISO shooting with the 30D and I am pretty happy with how it performed. The details of the shot are 1/6th second exposure at 17mm ISO 1600 and hand held ;) I had to crop a wee bit tighter than I wanted too due to the building on the lefts converging verticals and my lack of PS skills to rectify it ;) All C+C welcome.
Cheers and thanks for looking
Ricky
Edited to say I have resized at hopefully it will look better ;)

You did a good job of capturing this striking structure. Specially Impressive considering it's handheld. Is the horizon level?

Thanks for posting.

You can take up the ISO at quite a high level with the 30D and still get good quality shots at night and not see too much noise, this shot is living proof of that. And its a good shot of an impressive building, well done.

Photographs are records of life. Pity they don't make music when you put them in a record player. :p

thanks Joe I think the horizon is pretty level, I think it looks out a wee bit because the ground to the right is higher than the ground to the left ;) Thanks for the feedback :)

Doug thanks mate, yes Kracow is a lovely city I will be back soon I hope :)

Anthony Thanks for these comments, i am very impressed with the way the 30D handles noise it is much better than my 350D that was pretty much useless at ISO1600 (well in my hands that is) ;)

Thanks again Mark, I think it was all the Polish Vodka I had taken that night that kept my hand so steady ;) ;)

Wow Ricky,

Great shot of an old medieval building...Barbakan is there since the 1300's to protect the original old city of Krakow....It is part of the wall construction surrounding the old City of Krakow...which back in those times was a trading hub of the world for various products from everywhere...

As a little boy, I would often play inside the Barbakan and "Planty", which are the chestnut and maple and oak tree lined walkway alleys through a part of the outer city...

The Gate to the Old City of Krakow is just one of only a couple left, as a reminder of the wall that surrounded the city... Barbakan is the only type of it's structure to compliment the many gates that there were to the old City...

Just spoke to my father who just returned from Krakow last week...he owned the stores at the corner Florianska there...He says that the Barbakan has gone through a multi year renovation and it has just recently been completed...that entire area is now preserved, and the public transportation trolley's and all automobiles are now restricted from the area...

Pope John Paul II would walk these streets daily from the St. Florian Church where I was baptised, as he served as a priest in the early 1950's....and it's just up Florianska Street to St. Mary's Church where he also served as Cardinal of the City, prior to becoming the Pope...
You and I walked those same streets every day...

That's quite a trip down memory lane for me...I was only nine when I left for the US in 1960...I hope Ricky you and your wife have enjoyed your visit to Krakow...Your other thread on the St. Mary's Church goes well with this one...

Thanks again for sharing your photo.
John

Thanks once again John for a very informative post on this lovely structure. We did notice that the area surrounding the Barbacan had recently been renovated, the roads and pavements are lovely from the gate right through the square. Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my post :) :)
Cheers Ricky

This is lovely, although a bit tight in the frame, a bit more space on the top would help.

Coincidentally, I've just been checking on flight to Kracow, we are meeting some Polish friends there next May, a couple of days in Kracow followed by a weeks photography in the Tatra mountains.
