I'm currently using a 30d and looking at upgrading to a full frame camera and after some advice.

I primarily shoot portrait & landscape but also some motorsport. The full frame camera is appealing particularly for stock photos. I'm after optimum resolution and image quality though and this is where the dilema begins.

The two cameras of choice seem to be the 1D MkII N at 8mp and 8.5fps and the 5D at 12mp and 3fps. I'm discounting the 1DS which of course would be perfect but is too pricey.

Given the choice and similar prices, would I be better off with the 1D MKII N or the 5D? It seems like a tough one at the moment and wanted to do my research before I jump in.

Don't know much about the 1D MkII N but read a lot of reviews on the 5D.

search for 1d 5d in the same search

theres many many many identical threads. The basic point is they are both exceptional cameras, but entirely different in every way. If you need speed/weather sealed/AF then the 1d2 is great

if you need small, high resolution FF, then the 5d is great

Well, first, the 1DMKIIN isn't a ff. It's got a 1.3x crop, making the sensor larger than the 30D but smaller than ff. I've had both...still have the 5D. The only thing that I don't shoot, that you do, is motor sport...that would definitely fall into the MKIIN's realm. The 5D just isn't fast enough (IMO) for sports...it's hard enough to use it for birds in flight...everything else about the 5D is my favorite though. I hated the weight of the MKIIN (especially coupled with the larger lenses) but I miss it's speed. FF is a dream. The MKIIN handles higher ISO's pretty well but not as good as the 5D. I would choose the 5D for portraits and landscapes anyday and the MKIIN for motorsports....(not much help am I?)

Hope you guys don't mind me jumping on this one, but I'm considering a very similar choice between the 5D and the MkII N. And my question is between the two, which one holds up better under bad circumstances? Don't get me wrong I baby my camera's as much as I can, but I'll be taking them on a trip that will have extreme temperature conditions ( think Himalayas to Madagascar) and humidity, shall we say... challenges.

And I'm not in a situation finacially where I could just replace it immediately if it breaks down. I will be taking a second digital body with me and probably my trusty 1V as well, but I intend on relying mainly upon this next camera.

The 5d or the MkII N??

If your primary concern is the environment you'll be in, no question, get a 1D IIn. Or a camera rain cover (or both!).

On the contrary, lots of help. Yeah I just read about the 1.3 crop... Ooops. to be honest, I'm doing a lot more stuff that sounds like it would be perfect for the 5d (more so than the 1dmkii) but it's nice to have that high frame rate for certain applications. I don't use it much but when I do (I've got 5fps on the 30d) it's a real bonus. For motorsport it's very useful. I also photograph motorcycle stunting when the high frame rate is great (especially when things are going wrong).

Maybe one option would be to keep the 30d and get a 5d for my fine art & stock shots. The 30d is perfect for motorsports applications and with the L glass it's amazing.

Sounds like a plan. I kept my 20D for tele work and when I wnated faster than 3 fps when I got the 5D.

That is a very good combination...for a while I was using the 30D (for bird shots) and I liked the combo a lot. I'd NEVER give up my 5D (unless years down the road they improve upon it). (sold the 30 for glass ;) ). I wasn't sure if you were going to keep your 30 but if you do, I'd for sure go for the 5.

I knew I'd find the answer on here... LOL

I guess the perfect camera would be the 1Ds MkII but then I'd have a problem with drawing attention... (not to mention the cost). The other thing I like about the 5d is that it 'blends in with the crowd' (until you put a big white lens on it) and I like that.

Yes, it's looking like keeping the 30d for sport is ideal.

I know also that many of the agencies are now happilly endorcing the 5d in an otherwise 1Ds world.

Yeah I just read about a rumour of that in a thread called 40d 1st leak... sounds very interesting.

A 5d with 5fps would be the answer to my prayers.

The funny thing is if the original 5D were released with 4 to 5fps, it wouldn't have been ragged on so much when it came out.
