I have discovered on my 1D that if I use only the shutter button to focus and take the exposure the autofocus is very much faster. I have been using the back button for about a month and just switched back on Saturday to the shutter button only and it worked far better.

Old news or just pure strange?

I do both ways. I don't really notice a difference. I'd say the biggest difference for me, is the once in a blue moon hitting the shutter all the way down. Pre-mature shutteritis.

Both ways are valueable, depending on the situation. I like having the option of being able to use both ways.

Probably becuase you have to fully press the back button in relation to the shutter button which is far more sensitive to a mid way execution to focus

There wont be any AF speed difference. Just the command delay
