i hope this thread doesnt die. I'm interested to see how you work through your dilemma. i cant get good indoor shots around my own house with the kit lens, a flash and every light i have turned on (much less a dimly lit club). that's one of the reasons i bought a 50mm 1.8 today. Id rather have to do a little "zoom shuffle" than to have every picture under exposed.

Say J,

at 1.8 with the 50mm, you'll be able to get reasonable results provided you boost the ISO some...

I'm having reasonable success with room to spare at ISO 1250... and a couple of my 1.8 lenses seem to be getting enough light for adequate shutter speeds to hand hold the camera and get pretty good photos...

Post some here and lets see how you do...

john

Who……me? I cant make this thing take properly exposed pictures of my feet under light from a halogen. That’s why I’m juggling post like this back up to the top with my “bumps” cleverly disguised as queries. Trying to learn by proxy.

J...This is the smallest Forum Topic Area in this entire POTN...Just start your own thread in the lens section...It's much a bigger and busier topic section and you'll get a lot more responses...

Just kidding about juggling the thread. I am interested in seeing what the OP does because I can see myself in the same situation shooting in clubs. I have started my own post on the issue though and am getting lots of help from the members.

Thanks.

lol :)

I will defanitely not let the thread die, I always randomly return later!

The concert is New Year's Eve, so there won't be results for a while.

And Christmas could always go well and yield me a 50 1.8, who knows!

Look Newbie,..don't feel like such a newbie...you found this forum...that's a very good sign...and you posted a very nice picture...(it's small though, but very good) Check the picture posting rules and regs at the top of this Performing Arts front page...also, you might as well check the Q & A that will answer the most commonly asked questions...To answer your question about the numbers...
for example:
these numbers mean:
iso1600 1/60th f/4.5 24mm

ISO 1600

shutter speed: 1/60th of a second

f/4.5: is the aperture or lens opening to permit light in

24mm: is the focal length at the time that photo was taken with the lens...in this case it is the kit zoom lens (18mm-55mm) so each focal length within the parameters of the kit lens of (18mm-55mm) apparently is a little bit different, as established by the shooter...

 Thanks John! I have been going through a bunch of different FAQ from this forum ... reading and re-reading... and re-reading again  I'll make heads and tails of them soon enough.

Thanks for answering my question :)

Thanks for answering my question :)

Stay with the program here...sooner than later, it will all click and improvements will promptly appear...
Some confusing things about photography might be SPEED...

A fast lens is fast because it allows more light in...therefore it permits the use of a lower number aperture setting...
So while the aperture number is lower, you can use a faster shutter speed...

If the aperture number on your lens is 1.4 or 1.8 or 2.0 or 2.8, it is a faster lens... it is usually a prime (with a fixed length, like 50mm)...If the aperture number is 3.5, 4.0, 5.6 than it's medium speed...But that's on a fixed length lens called a prime lens...the zoom lenses have incrementally increasing variable apertures based on the focal length...they are generally slower than prime lenses...

Also, higher ISO settings yield use of faster shutter speeds.

Faster shutter speeds take pictures of faster action, like cars, runners, skiers...

So be careful about terminology used here...as photog jargon can be confusing, especially around the "speed topic"...

Take care,

John

Like johnstoy stated...if flash is OK? then you are golden!!!

Regardless of whether flash is OK to use at a particular show the results with flash are generally sub par - they produce flat photos and destroy the ambience of the performance. Much better to go the high ISO/fast glass route.
