350D Problem

Hi, I have just bought a 350D and am just starting to use the camera. I think I have an issue with the timer coming on by default in the Creative Zone settings though.

In the 'green' or any other pre-set setting, the camera is fine and I can take pictures no problem. However, if I turn the dial around to the Creative Zone either: a) when I press the shutter button down, nothing happens; or b) the shutter button starts what seems to be the self timer - the lamp flashes and the camera beeps, about 20 seconds of beeping and flashing later, the shutter fires. This happens in all of the Creative Zone settings but not in any of the other pre-set settings.

Does it look like I have a faulty camera or could there be some hidden setting which is delaying the shutter in the Creative Zone settings?

Thanks for any help.

Have you checked that the self-timer is not turned on?

Wild guess, since I dont have a 350D, but you probabely set drive mode to self timer.
In the non-creative 'pictogram modes' I guess the drive mode is set depending on the pictogram, so the self timer setting is 'overruled'.

It's easy to bump the self timer button when shooting. Canon stupidly put it right below the Av shift button. I would inadvertently hit that all the time - until I sold it.

It pays to read your 'INSTRUCTION' book, thats whats its for. And as people have pointed out....turn the self timer off, simple really.

Thanks for the replies but as far as I can tell the self timer is not on.

The manual states the self timer is 10 seconds and the beeps speed up just before the shutter activates. I get a 20 second delay before the shutter fires and the beeps do not speed up.

Can yo check the Custom Functions settings? Set them to default values and see what happens.

If you're positive that the self-timer isn't set, then it looks like an error. I've just checked my 350D manual and there's nothing in the Custom Functions that could cause this behaviour.

Here's a thought though: what happens if you do try to use the self timer? In Basic Zone modes and in Creative Zone modes?

Same here, what's more, it remembers between power cycles. I turn on the camera, press and nothing. Than I stupidly look down at the thing trying to figure out what's going on and what the flashing about when I hear the click of the shutter. Then I remember I had it set to self-time.

And me. The self timer button is just above the LCD panel illumination button. There have been a few times when I've been trying to take pictures of fireworks, and I can't see the LCD in the dark, but I've accidentally pressed the self-timer instead of the LCD illuminator. That makes it kinda hard to get the timing right for the fireworks!

Of course my problem would go away if I got a 400D, since the LCD has been abolished. But yours wouldn't! :)

A chance it could be reload the firmware and see if this helps to solve the problem.

As far as I can remember, in some thread in this forum it was reported a similar problem with delayed shoots and the guilty was that the mirror lock-up function was activated; if I am not wrong.

I have never had a problem inadvertantly bumping the self timer...

But I bet that the self timer has been activated or the CF for the self timer has been set...

It's definitely easy to hit the timer button on the XT. I've done it several times already. I also have a habit of hitting the info button with my nose. Good thing a half-press of the shutter takes me back to shooting mode.
