A few shots from the weekend in the city, 300 thousand people plus 30C heat made it a little difficult but I think I managed a few good shots

My favs are the 2nd one with all the trails (good pic) and the last one with the city skyline. The next to last one is suffering heat haze or smoke haze -looks soft all over.

Thanks, that second last one is a very heavy crop and was far away as well.

Oh well, we can only work with what we've got. Was it the 100-300mm?

This thing is probably not so easy too shoot... not so much because of speed, but because it's hard to get interesting angle, which would show their speed and ability to fly low and accurate. To be honest I have no idea how I would go shoot something like this, except that I would set remotes straight under "gates" where planes have to fly through... if allowed of course.
Otherwise some photos are nice, some are hmm... a bit less nice (no offense :) ). Another thing I don't really like is that they look extremly compressed or extremly croped. If it's first option then it's no big deal since original file is something completely different, if it's second option then... :)

Thanks for the comments. we went along early but the crowd was 300 thousand strong in 30C heat. We had problems finding anywhere near enough to the action and I was getting shoved away from my position all the time. one person came up to my husband who was videoing and asked if she could stand in front of his camera which was on a tripod. As she was really short he said yes. She then proceeded to call her whole family including her 7 foot tall husband to stand in front of him "sigh". people can be so arrogant at times and I could have knocked her head off LOL but Im a placid person most of the time. Anyway the worst of these shots was a heavy crop to cut out heads that constantly were in my way and i was getting bumped around while taking it anyway. i kept the shot because its is the only one of that angle. I was using a canon 100-300 usm and it was not really fast enough at times for these shots.

I've shot airshows. All I can say is "Whoa." To which I might add, "Holy frick."

Depite the heavy cropping of the 2nd last I do like that one. I think the angle and the smoke trail in the picture help show the agility with which these things travel. Those pilots must have incredible reflexes.

ha! I think you had a much better view than I did. I was right near the runway so got to see them all taking off... was so crowded though hey! Of the race itself I mostly only saw when they did a loop.

#1 and #8 are my favorite
i love that f/a-18 and i love seeing the city behind the planes (perth is such a nice city)

shooting at the air race was difficult, i understand how hard it was and you did very well considering the problems you would have had finding a clear shot
(i wound up standing on a bike locker with about 4 little kids)

i have only one piece of advice, lower your shutter speed a bit to get some blur in the propeller of the aircraft, then it doesnt look like the plane is about to fall out of the sky
less than 1/320 generally works pretty well
