Since pelicans are primarly fish eaters, that "nail" would be his fish hook - as in when he clamps down on a fish, the hook prevents it from getting away.
They are amazing fishermen; where I spent summers as a kid, we watched these birds with some considerable envy.
I would say you got your focus right bang on, and your copy appears to be quite sharp. There was a problem with the first ones, which my dealer said were all recalled for re-calibration. After that, no more problems, so the comments about "poor" copies likely arose from that period.
I'd be interested in what f/stop and focal length etc you used for that picture.
You are going to love that lens.
