... how much of your style do you compromise when you are trying to sell to a customer.

If you want to eat, you compromise 100%. Look at many professional photogs, not just art photoblogs, and you will see many different styles put together. Why? to have the broadest appeal and land the most jobs.

Let me guess, you are under 25 years old?

this is laughable. Art is also to a LARGER degree marketability. I have friends that are professional artists. If they created only for themselves, they would be out on the street. art comes from within, but hopefully speaks or moves those removed from ourselves. Art is communication at its highest form and to talk to yourself would be foolish.

Lisa, I agree with your above post 1000000%

Your right, art in itself is the highest form of communication, it allow one to express themselves, to be open to the world with all there vulnerabilitys/strengths/desires for all to see. And when those that don't express themselves critique a photo then that artist is being attacked for creating something that at the end represents themselves. That’s why it hurts.
Art should be able feelings and last time I checked these could not be brought off by the dollar.

But you or anyone that decides that they are going to be an artist, don't because you want to make money at it. That is wrong cause then all you see at the end of the day is the mighty dollar. which really is just a waste. Then what happens is the art is being driven by the dollar and not by the creation of art itself. Which again is what art is all about. If you wont to eat, find a job that pays cause art will never pay.

And lets see what age has to do with this ideals. in a word nothing. In fact I am 32. But I know what I believe. I will stand by my option and voice it when ever I feel like it. Sure it may not be to some people liking but that is to be expected.

But I could also assume by your comments that you are just another typical American?

Now now, lets not get personal :)

I think Dante is saying that for most of us, eating comes first, art comes second.

If this is a hobby, then you shouldn't compromise your work at all.
If you derive a living from it, then earn your food before you work on your artistic legacy.

I think what Mark is saying is that the artistic value of a shot does not always depends on technical merit, and that people shouldn't get discouraged when they produce something that they are proud of, only to have it knocked down for having a highlight blown somewhere in the background.

I think the way the message is delivered is often much more important then what is actually said. Pointing how they could possibly make the image even better in a polite and helpful way will encourage the orginal poster to work harder and they will be more likely to seek additional feedback in the future.
Being blunt and nasty usually doesn't work as this type of critic usually offers no encouragement.

Mike

IE: Good composition and lighting but watch your highlights =good
IE: If you knew anything about exposure maybe you won't blow your hightlights =not so good.

OMG I saw a nipple, my eye's are bleeding!
