Purely by luck rather than planning, I was asked to do the production photography for the new production of Blondel in London. I've photographed quite a few amateur shows up to now, but never a pro' one, and certainly none with someone of the stature of Tim Rice sat there (tried not to get in his way, but you can't make an omlette without breaking eggs!). Tried the IS version of the 70-200mm f2.8L, and I must say it is awesome, I want to buy one now!!

They've put the some of the pictures on the shows website here :-

I'm actually supposed to be photographing a play at the same venue fairly soon - I was wondering what's it like light/set-up wise? Would be my first theatre shoot.

Cheers,
M

It's good fun, never seen it before, and to be honest, it made the job harder as I was laughing so much. It doesn't take itself very seriously, which makes for an entertaining two hours. There's some great performances, good music and superb lyrics!

Lighting wise, that would depend entirely on the lighting designer. Setup wise, the stage is on the flat, with the seating rising from the front of the stage backwards i.e. no orchestra pit. There are galleries to shoot from, but I stayed in the main auditorium and wandered.

Very nice pictures...why don't you pick out your favorites and post them up front, in this thread...I almost didn't bother going to additional links to check them out...usually I don't go past this forum's first pages...

Regarding your use of the IS on the 70-200mm 2.8L IS...

Is the IS feature something you used continuously? which setting of the IS feature did you use?

Looks like a wonderful opportunity that you thoroughly capitalized on...congratulations on your sucess...

John

Thanks

I used the IS on setting '1', which I believe is for still subjects, '2' is for moving subjects according to the maual. I used it constantly throughout the show, I was worried a bit about battery life, but it didn't seem to be a problem at all. Can't wait to buy one of these lenses, I need to save my pennies!

Yer Sir, Sir...

I most certainly appreciate the feedback...

Now I just have to find a subject to use the lens on...I bought it for all the deer I have around my property...but it's hunting season and they all are hiding in the thickets, and don't dare to come out...

My local concert venue won't let me use it to photograph stage action...They have their own photogs on payroll within their many subsidiaries...
