So would the $60 Sennheisers be an ill purchase?

I doubt it. I don't think you can go wrong with Sennheisers.

Be aware though, that you will want every single pair of headphones you ever own to be Sennheisers. That could get expensive. Then again, I've only owned 2 pairs and my good pair could last me 15 years in a heartbeat.

Not at all. I think they make excellent headphones. I was probably obfuscating a bit with my comments on Bose, but I just couldn't let Scott get away with it.

I don't understand noise-canceling headphones. Led Zeppelin at 11 cancels most everything. :-)

I think Bose got the market - in a big way - on noise-canceling headphones. But I recently saw a Koss pair, so I have hopes.

But if you're in an environment that requires noise-canceling headphones then the Bose probably won't sound so bad. :p

So it's like L glass eh? Get your feet wet with the relatively inexpensive 17-40...then you're doomed.

Hmm. I might go for 'em then. At least see what the brand is all about. I can't swing $400 on a pair of headphones though. It's not even remotely justifiable right now...and may or may not ever be.

Audiphile headphones on the cheap ?

Koss is your best bet I suppose, anything consider real decent is in the hundreds.

My Ety ER 4 cose my £75/$140, Sennheiser HD580 was about $300 and my HD600 was about $550. Not to mention an Tube Headphone Amp to power that, which cost me about $800...yup, you can get amps just for headphones.

So, $50, get a pair of Koss or Sony ear buds.

Not really. You only need 2 pairs of headphones really. One small for the MP3 player/etc, and one set of real ones for the stereo system.

I once had the joy of listening to a pair of Grados on a tube amp. That was nice.

Hah this is how much of a true audiophile I am NOT - my "stereo system" is an almost never-used Philips 3 Disk Changer. Dual Cassette, Amp, Changer, AM/FM all in one unit. I have some Altec Lansings hooked up to my desktop that, IMO, sound a helluva lot better than the stereo that cost me 2x more.

This may as well be Chinese for all I understand it.

My first "real" stereo system was an NAD bridgeable integrated amp, Harmon Kardon marble turntable, Denon cassette deck, Harmon Kardon tuner, and Klipsch Tower II speakers and Koss Pro4AAA headphones.

Yep, that's a lot of Chinese to you. :-)

Hello,

Well, not quite $50, and they are not terribly sexy, but I like the Grado SR-60's (external link) for portable use. In fact, these are the only headphones that I use when I'm editing down my images in Capture One or the Bridge. (there, a tie-in to Digital Photography workflow).

I'll keep those in mind too. I'm really not sure what to buy, and I'm not in a rush either. I may end up waiting and buying some top end 'phones from the get go.

After all, it didn't take me long to abandon my kit lens. ;) :p

Ihave three pair oF Sennheiser
HD 480
HD 450 and
HD 495

They are all excellent and I have used them for several years with my home studio gear.
the 495s are slightly inferior mainly because the earpads are not as close fitting as the other two, however they are all ten years old or more and probably outdated and updated by now, the cheapest were the 495s (under your budget in UK Pounds) but the
other two pair were twice your budget ten years ago, still you could save up! get a good set of headphones and they will last you, if not a lifetime, pretty close to it.

I decided to increase my budget since it was just a made up number anyway and go with the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro Noise canceling 'phones. I saw headphone.com has 'em for half of the list price. I think noise cancellation is a good idea if I'm in a rather quiet place and still want to jam a bit.

Any opinions before I press Go on Monday?
