Greetings from a new 5D owner and Nikon guy

Hi All,

Been shooting with Nikon gear for about 2 years or so. Have always been amazed at the high ISO capabilities of the 5D over any other Nikon body, but never pulled the trigger because of what was already invested into my kit. Had no intention of buying yesterday, but saw all the excitement over the Dell discounts + the double rebates and said....."What the heck" . After the Dell discounts and double rebates, I'm a new owner of a 5D for less than $1800.

I'll still keep my Nikon gear, but I can't wait to use the 5D for indoor sports (My HS Kids) and night football. Real anxious to see the results and I'm sure I will not be disappointed. I also popped for a 85 f1.2L that will end up my hoop kit. I understand a 50 F1.2 is ready to be released?

I need to keep my Nikon gear for now as I have way too much invested in bodies and high end glass. Had a D200 and now using a D2XS.

Looking forward to participating in the forum and gaining some insight from all the Canon shooters out there. Hope to provide some non-biased opinions/impressions between the manufacturers as I get going too.

Thanks Tom. No intention of dishing my D2XS, but really wanted to see the hype of the 5D and what it could do for indoor sports. Should be here next week and will report back with thoughts on comparisons.

Welcome! My 5D and 85/1.2 lens are my favorite companions to shoot with....even if they are a bit heavy. They are still worth it.

I'm excited to see the 85 1.2 at work. I lug around my Nikon 200 f2 and 200-400 f4 sometimes and those are a killer after awhile. Then again, I could use the workout lol.

Cool Dont blame u on not ditchin the d2x I really miss mine definatley gonna have to get another alongside my 1d I think.

I dont have 5D and I didn't come from D200 but coming from D70 > 30D, I can safely say the Canon 350/10/20/30 handles a lot worse then D70. (this is personal, my hand are better suited towards Nikon)
In terms of image quality it doesn't delivery any better. If you are really picky and looks pixel by pixel then you might find the Canon to be better at handling noise.

I only went to Canon side because my d70 broke and I needed 5FPS camera and only 5FPS fitted my budget was the 30D.
Oh also Canon does killer good quality L lenses at cheaper price then Nikons equivalent.

I hate Nikon becasue they still have my body for repair.....6 months so far it will be in a week.

I hate to rain on your parade, but is there any specific reason you didn't get a 30D and 85 1.8? The 5D certainly can do sports like pretty much any other SLR, but it has less FPS then the 30D. The 5D is generally considered a portrait body, and the 85 1.2L also a portrait lens with slow autofocusing apparently. I've read that the 85 1.8 is more intended for sport use.

Had some $$$ lying around and bought more on a whim during Dell discounts to see what the 5D was all about. Heard many good things and have seen some sports shooters on sidelines at local HS games. Also, wanted to check out the famed 85 1.2 as well.

I've got sports bodies in my Nikon gear with D2XS and D2HS that are both 8fps, but really wanted to check out Canon out of curiousity.

how does Nikon do at resell values?.. I know canon L glass resells very well.. I'd think Nikon would be similar if you decide to sell off and change systems... just a thought really... welcome the 5D is a beautiful camera and that 85mm is supposed to be fabulous.. allthough Maureen has told me how heavy it can be.. I hope you enjoy it..

No intention of ditching my Nikon glass, but curiousity killed the cat so to say, and I jumped on a 5D at Dell. Have too much invested in good Nikon lenses to make a total switch.

I've seen some really good low light shots with the 5D from others and wanted to see for myself LOL.

Heavy? Had to lug around and hand hold a 200 f2 VR for 4 hours. Now that's a workout

I'm playing with you... although having two systems does seem a bit much.. especially considering the lenses that go with both... But, to each their own.. I'm sure your Nikon setup is wonderful... don't have much experience with them though... I started Canon and have never really researched other systems.. But, if you can afford it and know how to use both to their advantage than hats off to you... I hope you stay around awhile.. we're a friendly bunch......well, most of us are.... just leave that Rockwell guy in the corner...

Agree, in the short time here, it seems a very friendly and helpful crew. Looking forward to the 5D arrival and contributing with thoughts from both sides of the fence.

Trust me, I'm really excited to putting the 5D through it's paces. I'm sure I will not be disappointed. Very fortunate to be able to mess around with both systems.
