Flash on G1

I am a new user of G1 and am very glad to find this
great place to learn from the G1 users all over the world.
On other Canon SLR cameras, such as 50E that I am using, the flash will be the main light source in P mode,
but in Av, Tv and M mode, the shutter speed/aperture combination will be used for background exposure and the flash will provide light for the foreground. My question is, is the same on G1? I found that sometimes I just got over exposure when the flash is on, specially for portrait. And, does the built-in flahs support E-TTL?
If I attach an external flash, 380EX, what will be the answer to above questions?

Thanks in advance!

G. Shen
