I have a 30d and want to do some time-lapse photography. How can I do this without a laptop?

Do I need the special timer remote control?

I don't know if this works on the 30d but my 5D manual shows as an accessory the "Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3" which has 4 functions: 1. Self-timer; 2. Interval Timer; 3. Bulb-exposure timer; 4. Shutter release count. I think interval timer is what you need. It says "the timer can be set anywhere from 1 sec to 99 hours, 59 minutes in 1 second increments."
Sounds like what you need? It connects to the remote control terminal (N3 type) on the
5D. If there's one of those on the 30D then it should work.

Film: Leica M-4, Elan 7E, Rolleiflex 2.8f, Pentax 645 -- Digital: Canon Pro-1, EOS 5D Mk III

Yes I use a TC-80N3 on my 30D, works fine.

It's been a while since I looked at it (and I don't have it installed on this computer) but does the "EOS Capture" utility allow timed shutter releases?

See above.

TC80 N3 or a third-party equivalent are about it. ISTR mention that Adidt makes one. If you find something that doesn't have an N3 plug, Canon makes T3 and mini-phone plug converters.

Second that. Used it on bonfire night set at 15 secintervals whilst I was setting off the fireworks for the kids, P mode, AI Servo worked a treat! Any combination of self timer, interval and multi exposures. Not cheap tho!
