By "academics" I mean folks with a bona fide doctorate of phylosophy....

If you had spelt that right I would have been worried, altought it would have explained a few behavioural quirks.

So long and thanks for all the flash

Well, give me another week or so and I'll be one. I defend my thesis on the 30th.

If you can find a sponsor, then you need no school beyond grade 8.
Should your sponsor be a well to do lady which you happen to fall in love with and v.v., then the whole world is at your feet, my boy. You could have any lens/camera your little heart fancies. Beats having to work for living any day.
Do you see how many guys are chatting on here every day, all day, not a worry in the world. Well, mah boy, I think those guys either have a well heeled sponsor or they are Canon shills, perhaps both.;) :D

Those guys posting all day are the guys, working in the same field as my dad, called IT. They sit infront of a computer "pretending" to do work, while in reality browsing forums, and doing about 2 minutes of work a week. Ever since the invention of the internet and forums and the popularity they have grossed, people have no longer had to follow in the footsteps of the main actor in office space.

In reality, I'm actually debating whether post secondary school is for me or not, because I am thinking of starting a business and using some of my other skills / things I enjoy in my future. It is depressing for me to see all these people who get a Uni degree, and either get no job, get a job and hate it, or decide after getting a job it is not for them and going into another field either having nothing to do with there degree, or going back to school to get a degree for whatever they have decided to do.

OK, OK...give me 3 guesses:

(1) Changing role of women in the 21st century Des Moines, Iowa society.
(2) Fortran VII application on coding of 3-D smilies.
(3) Nodal analysis of "Blackberry" communications paradigm shift.

Is that pedagogy ? Like management of math knowledge ?
Or math, like using math to manage knowledge ?
Or something "synergetic" ?
Extremely interesting, good luck with it.
Keep the presentation as simple and possible and have lottsa pertinent exibits and visuals. Lead them to ask you questions in the areas of your strength.

Yes, it is the management of mathematical knowledge. In particular, I looked at the representation of mathematical proofs and ways to capture their relationships formally in a library for say, an automated theorem prover (I'm in computer science).

If you can't present the thesis using the form of mime then it ain't worth a dime IMO ... and I speak from experience having already achieving a wide range of pointless honorifics

No, but he is a suitable role model. I'm sure any Belgian or French man could perform mime around any topic. It's a gift. All I ask is that the guy seek to simplify, to distill, the very essense of his thesis into a mine of his own.
