I took this image while walking along a trail down to the side of Ullswater in the Lake District. Very tricky trying to capture the depth of the scene and as a result it is a little "flatter" than I would have liked.

I like the shot, kind of difficult to judge the terrain, looks like it slopes away steeply!

I see you are just down the road from me :)

Yes, was quite a steep slope down. It was taken on a recent holiday, I'm not fortunate enough to live in such a beautiful place ;)

This is a 'nearly there' image, most elements come together quite well, but needs an additional point of interest to lift the image?

Wow, it's a small world!

Yes, that's exactly it! Maybe something in the FG or a lead-in element, what do you think?

Very nice photo, I agree with you, it's flat, you almost made up for it with the saturation, but still, there is not enough shadow detail. It's mostly midtone. I had to open it up in photoshop because I was curious to see what the histogram looked like..

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/rrrr/histogram.jpg

Alot of the shadow detail is cropped off the histogram. Which I think is why it looks flat. You could try to move the midtone data to the the highlight side of the histogram making the shadows darker, but you will lose some image qulaity in the final product by doing this:

Just a suggestion, It's a good idea to check your histogram after a shot like this to see if you got all of the data recorded. If not, you can always adjust your exposure and retake. Also, RAW is more forgiving than JPEG when it comes to shifting data around the histogram.

Wow, pixel-peeper alert ;)

Sorry, only joking. Seriously, knowing the time of year and the weather around here I would suggest that it is a fairly accurate representation of the scene at the time! It just depends ho wmuch you want to alter reality. Maybe a mid-tone curves 'boost' is what is needed.

It's ok, it was captured in raw so I'll have a little play and post back ;)

So, know any good locations around Cambridge to go shooting? Apart from the city itself I mean ;)

Ok, well I've tried a few different raw conversions, but it's hard to punch out more shadow detail without it looking "over-cooked". Even with a bit of dodging and burning it starts to look very "plasticy"

Rumrunner, I think your modification is about as far as I can push it, but it's definately an improvement! Thanks very much for your input!! :D

Mmmm, well in terms of landscapes, not really. It's quite frustrating living in such a flat part of the world, it's not the most photogenic. I gues the nearest place would have to be the Norfolk Broads.

There are some nice places around here. Houghton Mill is good, The Raptor Foundation if you are into birds (I have membership ;)). I used to live near Kings Lynn and there are some nice places over there too, Oxburgh Hall, Denver Mill etc.

Maybe have to arrange a shoot in Cambridge some time so I can play with your 24-105 :)

No problem! Cambridge has some nice places if you want to experiment with low-light shots. Coming up to the right time of year for it now with the dark evenings :)
