I have been playing with the thought of buying a 5D as I described here.

I have almost decided to do it but have a question for current 5D owners.

Does anybody own both 24-105 f/4 IS and 24-70 f/2.8 and use them with 5D ?

I already have the 24-70 f/2.8 so am wondering if it would be worth it to get the kit that includes the 24-105 f/4 IS or if I should save that money and get a grip+580ex instead.

Let me try to enter this again. Every once in a while, trying to post a reply just hangs.
Anyway.
I have the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 and just recently purchased a 5D and later the 24-70 f4.0L. I travel a lot and wanted a single carry lens. The 24-105 is, to me, ideal for that. I have travelled with the 24-70 and found it not to be long enough for my tastes and style of shooting. The IS on the 24-105 makes up for the lack of 2.8.
However, I will still use the 2.8 in certain circumstances but certainly not as much as before (I bought the 2.8 years ago when I went to AF with an Elan 7E).
If I had the Canon 2.8L I might feel differently. But for a single lens carry, the 5D and 24-105L is ideal. Coupled with IS and the 5Ds high ISO capabilities, it's hard to beat this combination for my uses.

Film: Leica M-4, Elan 7E, Rolleiflex 2.8f, Pentax 645 -- Digital: Canon Pro-1, EOS 5D Mk III

I purchased the 5D and 24-105 last March and have been very pleased with the combo. Right now it's the only digital equipment I own, but I'll be getting a backup 5D plus the 70-200 f/2.8 IS.

The 24-105 does everything I want it to so far. I like the little extra reach at 105, which makes candid portrait isolation very nice. Some complain of lack of a really good bokeh at f/4, but no offense to them, I have no idea what they are talking about IMHO.

I find the lens to be reasonably lightweight and compact for my purposes, and an excellent street as well as hiking lens. In addition to those situations, it gets heavy use at weddings and other social venues. NO complaints whatsoever. :D

I owned both lenses with my 5D. I found that I never used the 24-70...the range wasn't long enough...I ended up selling it. The 24-105 is on my camera about 80% of the time (the 100-400 or 17-40 the rest of the time). The grip is a monster, I never used it but the flash is useful...

No grip for me - the onboard batteries last just fine.

Some lightweight hand and neck straps provide sufficient "grip" for all my purposes. They lack the weight of a grip that just gets heavier toward the end of a long wedding day, plus they're very compact in the case. Rather spend the money on more glass.

I've had the 24-70 for a while, just added the 24-105 because there are frequently times I need that little more reach and the 70-200 doesn't focus close enough (indoors, doing pets). However, having tried it, I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a requirement for something the 24-105 uniquely brings to the table (IS or the closer focus than your 70-200). I see more Cos^4 light falloff, the hood's a wimpy, ineffective little thing, and the zoom and focus rings on the 24-105 just seem to be positioned less well than they are on the 24-70 (part of that may be the barrel diameter); at any rate I found myself jostling the focussing ring when trying to zoom more often than I like. I don't use a grip, so I don't see that as important either. Battery life's quite good without. Second flash, yes - get one.

the 24-105 is about an inch shorter (if I remember correctly) and quite a bit lighter...

I wouldn't say "quite a bit" lighter. Neither of them's a "Nifty", but they're not a 70-200 IS either. On a body, and with flash attached, there's not really a difference I can tell. I think the book weight difference is a little under 300 g., but you'll easily be carrying 1.5+ kg with camera and even the 24-105. Add a grip and/or flash, and . . .

Weight?
I feel that 70-200L IS is not heavy now, neither 100-400L.
I love 24-70L, in my trip in Europe i just used 10-22 and 24-70 mostly and i didn't find that i need more, just few times i swap my 70-200 or 100-400 for some birds, so instead of birds are lions or wildlife, so i don't know what is difference in Africa than Europe to use 24-105 rather than 24-70.

I have a 5D W/grip and use it with the 24-105...I love it I shoot mostly weddings and it was the right choice for me...I don`t open real wide so the IS helps when shooting in fading autumn light..But I always lusted for the 24-70 2.8...I bought one this past June and use it on my 20d I use it for candids at the receptions...and an all purpose lens...I love it also...its nice to have them both and soon I am planing on treating myself to a 1D MkIIN and useing the 24-70 on that beast...with a 1.3 crop factor it should be more useful on tight jobs and just for the fun of it

Tommy, is there any way one of us (meaning me) could help you out by taking advantage of Dell's deal and mailing it to you? I don't know how international mail works.

I've used the 24-105, seen many results from it. I own the 24-70. They are both great lenses as far as I'm concerned. I'd love to have both.

But if I were you, I'd go for the 580ex. It's a great flash and opens up endless possibilities. Now if I can only learn to use mine better.
