Pardon my gratuitous use of B/W here, but I wasn't shooting these for anyone but a friend of my wife and so I took some liberties. I normally don't shoot High School sports, and was going to just show up and shoot one of her son's matches, but as luck would have it, I got there just after one of his matches so I had to sit through and entire round again until he came back up. It was more rewarding then I had planned or expected. Anyway, here are a few from yesturday. Cheers.

the guy lost a point on this move... something about not being allowed to use the opponents noise for leverage.

Ah the joys of slow shutter speeds - just like the old days

Stellar images Mark, the 85mm is tack sharp, and the B&W give all the images that artistic, classic feel.

The last image is my favorite with the ref looking so intently

Cross,

As always... great shots. Did you shot in BW or convert to them. I will need to try some of them with the wrestling shots this year. May I ask the Lens and settings. I could not pull up the Data on the shots.

I am looking for new glass for in the gym this year. I use my 50mm 1.8 a lot and get good results and was thinking of adding the 85 mm f/1.8 USM EF Lens and see how that goes. At around $350 its not too hurtfull.

Hawk, these were shot with a 20d and an 85 f1.8. Iso was 1600, f2.0 and shutter was usually 1/320. These were shot color and then coverted to b/w using gradient maps. Hope that helps.

Thanks steve.... just looked at your swimming stuff. Very nice indeed as well.

Cheers.

The level of sharpness seems quite good. Your postioning on these shots is great, considering how hard it is to be in the right spot at the right time for wrestling.

Were you using the regular focus mode or did you make the shift to the custom setting using the * button??

Wow...these were great. Brought back some fun memories when I used to shoot HS wrestling years ago.

Nice job!

I use Canon gear...have several bodies and lenses and am quite pleased with them.

20D - no, I don't use the little star button. I should learn to use it for sports like this that give me more time compose the shots but just haven't taken the time to master it yet.

Tony - thanks. I have a lot of respect for these guys though I never did the sport myself.

I loved the first image, especially the face on the kid getting rocked into the mat.

Snir... so far what I have learned on this one is the kid went in for a basic ACL repair surgery last Spring and there were complications where he ended up having much of his leg amputated. But undaunted, he wanted to come back and compete - and that is exactly what he is doing. He won all of his matches while I was watching. I am going to try to attend another match and get some better shots of him. Really impressive young man.
