After reading about the merits of using separate buttons for AE/AF I decided to give it a try....discovered though that it won't work for me cos I use my left eye on the viewfinder and my thumb (when not using the thumbwheel) usually supports my cheekbone for stability. Ergo, it's hard to use my thumb to AF. Any left handers experience this?

I have seen a thread where several left handed photogs had said they operate their cameras like right handers would......

Sounds like you are 'left eyer' rather then left hander ;)
I gave up using my left eye, back in the days when shooting Nikon: You needed to pull out the transport lever (remember those?) to activate the light meter. It would stick in my right eye, and transporting without taking your eye from the VF wasn't possible.

It might be an idea to see if using your right eye works for you... Camera's are designed rather discriminating

I'm left handed and left eyed. Of course like they say "nobody made a left handed monkey wrench" ;) . I use my left eye in the VF but of course that kinda cramps things seeing that most controls are on the right side. I have not tried the AE/AF using different controls but it has been swirling around in my "right" brain for about a month since reading about it. Will have to try it and see if my right hand is to cramped to do it effectively as you mention. Gerry

If the southpaws get a petition going we may sway manufacturers to issue left handed versions of their popular SLRs...after all we make up, what, 10% of the market? ;)

Amen, preach it. I, however, shot right eyed, and use that * button to focus. I've adapted.

Yup - what really matters (IMO) is which eye is the master eye, and there seems to be no hard and fast rule.

I'm a lefty, but I'm right-eyed. While this posed some rather minor problems using a shotgun, shooting a camera right-eyed gets your face to the left of the camera and away from the right-hand controls.

Edit: Just started using the *AF button a few days ago after reading threads about it - should have started sooner.

Being left-eyed must present a bit of a problem, unless one can use the "slave" eye. However I must admit having my left eye out to the left of the camera poses a bit of a problem too - fortunately the left eye will "wink" quite well.

As for special cameras, I can't see that happening - we can't even get a programmable print button!!

I for the love of heaven above cannot look through the viewfinder with my right eye without closing my left. But that makes it all the harder to keep my right open. And my vision is weaker in my right as well and I can't compensate even after twiddling with the diopter...I saw B&H selling custom diopters and man they ain't cheap

Left everything. Use left eye and * for AF but don't have a problem with it. My problem is my cheek is always messing up the back LCD.:(

I'm lefthanded everything and left eyed too. I've noticed that when I have the focus set the the * my thumb gets stuck in my right eye. I've done that a few times now LOL....... I can't imagine using the camera any other way to be honest.
